We recently bought a 15 acre property, and while walking it on New years eve, came across about 10 different trees like this....
Moose?

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Well, we do have another tree on the property which IS definitely porcupine & just at the base of the tree..... This does NOT compare whatsoever! Look how high up these gouges are......??

If those are popler trees than definately moose. I have seen that in many places, especially if there is a shortage of young willow or aspen trees for food.

At first, we thought perhaps bear..... if you look at the tops of the marks, it looks like claw marks, but have since learned that moose will scrape trees with their teeth. These gouges are VERY deep. I can't even imagine what kind of porcupine might do this..... eek!

It is they do that on my property they eat the bark off the soft maple trees all winter and during the spring!!!

It is moose. At first I wondered about what kind of tree, but in the last picture it does looks like poplar.
When they eat bark like this, it is usually late winter/early spring, when small brush for browsing is geting scarce. In the pictures the bruising of the tree looks fresher than last spring. However, I don't think they ever chew bark like this in the summer, when there is so much fresh sprouts to eat.
The fact there are no tracks in the snow, and if there had been tracks in the snow, then more snow, the tracks would still be visible, even in the pictures,
I think it must have been done last spring.

Well, we just had a huge thaw & lost all the snow that fell prior to Christmas & then got a brand new dumping .... These markings were quite fresh as there was sap coming from the gouges. We have walked the land many times since September, and there was nothing on those trees up until now....
We'll keep an eye on the area & look for tracks.......

Looks like a moose to me, but the tracks would tell you for sure.... There a little different than a porky....:p:D;)

How so? ;) Are you saying that different animals make different tracks? But I thought they were all game animals, shouldn't they then have the same tracks? Or are you just trying to confuse us?? :p
