I keep looking and loving my Colt 20" Govt. profile gun with Acog, Matech and KAC RAS. But is the 20" AR even relevant anymore with all the middy and 18" rifles out there?. Discuss.:D

Looks damned ###y Ray. Isn't that the USMC setup, faithfully reproduced?
Not only that, but there's gotta be way more 20"s than 18"s out there (16"s not so sure).
Lemme know if you are having a fire sale, I may have to snag your nsn, hell, maybe even the whole thing...

Nope that's a Acog NSN, not the issued TA31RCOA4

It was sporting an Elcan a while ago, I think if I keep it I will put a Leupold MRT on it...the NSN Acog is part of my 6920/21 package. I guess what I was asking is will this do anything a M4 with magnified optics won't do to 500m??.

The M16A4 MWS is my favorite AR15/M16 variant. Which Colt model do you exactly have there, what kind of barrel is that? I've yet to find a factory 20" 1:7 flat-top with all the cool features (F FSB, bayo lug, rifle receiver extension etc.).

Any firearm in private hands is relevant up here.

Very nice! I wish I owned one. Oh well,I have an Izzy FAL to console me for now :)

I actually think a set up like yours is a better DMR set-up than the M14 that's issued in Iraq, at least if it was my *ss, I'd rather have something less conspicuous, lighter, shorter and more accurate. The extra bbl. length gives you extra reach at long range and extra speed (speed kills) at short range. So from the two-way perspective I'd think they still have application. From the range ranger perspective, why not - still fits in the case, longer forend rests nicely on the bags, and if you have a crappy day you can always say it's time to get a 16".

It's all Colt, took a while to piece it together, barrel is proper Govt. profile, the lower was a weird small hole front pivot with the pivot detent unfinished, I had it drilled out and put a milspec pivot in. It is a Sporter Target Model.

I'm not a soldier so all I really "know" about this topic is what I read.

Soldiers using the shorties like the handling and ease of use in close quarters. However, there have been concerns about downrange effectiveness. One solution has been to develop new ammunition with a heavier bullet (77 gr Mk 262) to improve performance at distances beyond 100 yards.

There has also been some experimentation with a totally new cartridge in .270 (the 6.8x43mm SPC) that is short enough to fit thru an M-16 type weapon in order to improve the terminal ballistics of the M4 Carbine.

In a more traditional battlefield as opposed to counter insurgency I think the longer barrelled version would be back in its own. Apparently as long as velocity of the 62 gr bullet in the SS109 round is above about 2700 fps it performs very well.

Since the 20" , the 18" , the 16", the 14.5", the 11.5" etc.... can only be shot at an approved range. What does it matter.
Do you plan on doing tactical entries with your 20"? If so where? So we all can come out and play :)

Really??? they can only be used at approved ranges...how come nobody ever told me...guess it's 7" ARs for me.:onCrack:

First of all, one needs to define the mission before we can discuss the relevancy of the tool in reference to the mission. For target shooting, anything is relevant as long as it can spit a bullet and hit the target well. For weight training, the Swiss Arms will give you the biggest arms. For recycling, the TAVOR/G36/FS2000 can be made into garbage bins. For bayoneting, a 20" is probably nicer. To hide it from the wife, I saw that in "Bourn's Ultimatum" one can put a SG552 in a backpack-it will just sit right next to the TV nicely without raising too much suspicion.

So, just to clarify, did that upper come with the flat top and fixed front sight?

The barrel came as Govt. Profile 1/7 ofcourse , fixed front sight with bayonet lug and flash hider, I stole the flattop from a Tactical Carbine 6721?? I think. Colt never Cataloged a gun with these specs at all for the civvy market...especially with the spec front pivot pin. It took some doing and collecting of parts to make. How about this config, (6920 lower)??
