Is this JP Sauer SxS Worth it?

Its a post war Sauer and it looks to be in pretty good condition. Is it worth the $889? Does it fit you? Do you like the way the gun handles? Is it suitable for the hunting you intend to use it for?

I'd get on the Intersurplus site and compare this gun's price to the many post war Sauers that are available there. That might help you get a good sense of what is a good price for this one.

"get on the Intersurplus site and compare this gun's price to the many post war Sauers that are available there"

This is the right answer... understanding there is a slight premium for one you can touch and inspect every nook and cranny. If an identical one on the Intersurplus site is going for $750-800 then the one you looked at is a good price.

Like many things, if the price is within a certain percentage so you feel once you buy it you are not getting ripped off, just buy it. What that percentage is... 20%? 40%? is up to you.

I will take a look there and see what I can find! Ya I'm not too concerned if it's 150$ off , as the condition does look good. I looked at a new Turkish over under that was 730 and the quality difference you could see right away

The chokes should be marked on the flats.. make sure to take it apart and have a look. And yes, have a good look at what intersurplus has....you might find an older gun in great condition for a few hundred less.
I sold a really nice Q1 grade Sauer at a gun show last year for $385. 1960s model.

If it's just a fun gun, you could easily find a similar, albeit perhaps not quite as good condition, Sauer in Intersurplus for $350 to $550.

Intersurplaus has a 30 day return policy. I like to buy them, get them home, clean the sh!t out of them because they are usually filthy, and then see what I've got. Haven't paid more that $500 for prewar guns which might be not quite as good as this one in the finishes department, but noticeably better made.

It's odd that there are no chokes. Possible, but odd. I;d want to check that out and not rely on the word of the dealer.

I checked on intersurplus and the highest price jp sauer sxs was 550, but it appears to be lessor quality than the one I saw. So with shipping around 600. I'll have to keep in mind just buying a cheaper one hmmmm

Its just my opinion but if its just for fooling around with, one in "lesser" condition will likely work just as well for you. And these guns are never commanding higher prices. The post war Sauers were built to a price point. If you are looking for a 12 ga, I'd look for a Husky 310 at Intersurplus. Actions from Sauer, barrels made with Swedish steel. Most are prewar gun and much better quality . And you won't be paying any more than for the post war Sauers.

It is a standard JP Sauer SxS in 12GA. Like this - it is a super nice example but 889$ is tooo high. 500-600$ is the way.
If you have money and willing to pay - go for it....

What makes you recommend that husqavarna 310 model in particular? I see alot of makers

I’ll start by saying that I’m pretty into SxS and have over 20 of them. I have what might be called opening price point guns that I bought for under $500, including Sauer and Husqvarna, all the way up to Best guns like a Purdey and numerous Lindner made Charles Dalys. I aim for getting the best quality I can for the least amount of money. And that leads me most often to guns built between 1900 and 1939. And it also leads me to guns from makers who aren’t as well known or valued as some others are in the shotgun world.

In my opinion, the Husky 310 series made IIRC from roughly 1910 to the early years of WWII uses great materials, high quality barrels and great workmanship. And for the quality level, consistently undervalued in the modern gun market. Like almost every maker, Husqvarna’s quality suffered somewhat in the post war years but not as much as the German makers in Suhl, under the control of the USSR through their proxy East Germany. I’ve bought two Husky 310 AS 16 gauge, one of which I later sold to a good friend. The “A” refers to the level of embellishment, the “S” refers to the quality of the barrels, “S” being the middle of three quality levels. So I’m not recommending them from a theoretical basis. I currently own one and love it.
