Hey all,

I received my *BRAND NEW* S&W 629 4.2" tonight and was surprised to see the following. Is it normal?
I'll wait for replies before my next move.

Thanks.

P.S. Anyone who owns the same revolver please compare and post if you have the same things or not.

Cylinder Peening on every notch (on a brand new firearm?):

Ejector Wobble:

No peening on mine(def not to that extent). I'll check for the wobble when I get a chance. Don't think it'll effect performance though.

Thank you, please do.

Yeah, on the Rugers (my only revolver experience) I never saw peening like this and the ejector is stationary so I don't know if this is normal.

Cheers~

My gun looks similar to yours and has the ejector wobble too. I have not even fired it yet. Never would have noticed it to be honest.

OK. Thanks. This is my first S&W and I feel I've envisioned them as god-like creations.

When I saw her, finally, finally holding her in my hands... well, reality hit me hard and it was a little unpleaseant.

If a few more owners could chime in I'll be content.

I guess they are just shooters afterall ;)

I just checked and mine don't seem to have either of these. The ejectors stay dead level when the cylinders are spun and there is minimal marking (no raised burrs) on the notches.
Mine did come with a visible (not tactile) ring around their cylinders.

I have a 686 4.2" and it does have very slight roughness on the edges but not as much as to see it as a ding or peen. Mine look like more like your 3rd image but only the left half of the roughness and not as much as you see on the right haf of your 3rd image. Mine are not as noticeable. My ejector doesn't wobble.

Yeah you know you're right they are just shooters and these variances could probably never make enough difference as accurate our hold allows but when you are dropping nearly $1k on a relatively simple mechanical product you would think their QC could be quite a bit better than it is and that goes for all manufacturers not just S&W.

Looks to me like you got a gun that has been played with by customers. The drag marks on the cylinder arise from normal usage but I have never seen them on a new unfired gun. The peening is certainly not normal. For the money you spent I would be contacting the store and have them replace the gun or return your money.

Take Care

Bob

Thanks guys.
Yeah, I definitely do not feel happy at all about the purchase.

I got it from EllwoodEpps, so I will contact them and see what they have to say.
I will update.

Cheers~

I had similar marks on my 500. Do be aware S&W test fires its pisols. Check the upper plastic case where they put the paperwork and lock. It probably has a shell casing up there. Yours however does seem more than normal.

I wouldn't expect to see that peening of the cylinder notches on a new gun. Epps should be informed...maybe email them the pictures you posted.

Email'd Epps with pictures. I was told that it was from "test firing" at the factory and then was offered a measely $35. No refunds. No Exchanges.

My only option: Send the revolver to S&W under Warranty. It is they who will decide wether the revolver gets fixed/replaced or not.

My plan is to now send the revolver to S&W. I expect I am now going to be without the revolver for several months.
Depressing.

So there you have it my friends.

Moral of the story: Ask for pictures before you buy because there is no returning once you buy, only warranty-repair/replacement from the manufacturer.

Worst Luck Ever.

epps is famous for t his sort of thing,( oh sorry you have to send it to so and so)..... no thanks, i just wont buy anything from you ever again.

Not normal to have that cylinder marking either.

Got the same song and dance from questar over a "new" g19 i bought a while back. Was filthy, no never seize on the frame, i said, whats up? Oh thats from test firing...

I pressed more, and they finally admitted they fired 50 rounds from it to " test" function.....well sorry it is no longer a new gun. I DOnt shop there anymore either.

I've shot model 10's with thousands of rounds of +P through them that didn't have peening like that..they didn't have any at all.
Always heard good things about EPPS too.

Theres Canadian S&W warranty centres here in Canada its a pain in the ass to send back to S&W in the USA i would call them and tell them what you have found and see what they say they may tell you to send in to Wortners in Chatham Ontario as they are a S&W Waranty depot. Thats not good what you have found unless they came across a bad batch of stainless steelbar it wouldnt be the first time this has happend but someone messed up in Quality Control good luck with your new gun i'm sure they will take care of it for you ..
