Is this Rem 700 a good deal?

Hi guys,
I don't have a digital camera so unforunately there will be no pics. I went into my loca gun store today and had only intended on buying some ammo and a bore snake but I asked to see a Rem 700 in .308 they had just got in. I don't have a good rifle and I want to start getting into presicion shooting so I have wanted to get a Rem 700 for sometime.

It had a "26 heavy barrel (blued not ss) (it weighs some 9lbs unloaded and without scope) and a very nice syn stock. It was coal colored with lighter grey fibers marbled throughout. It was chambered in .308 and thought I am ignorant when it comes to bolt action rifles I don't believe it was a short action as the bolt comes back rather far. I was told it was a Rem 700 VS that just stopped production last year or so. After inspecting the bore, crown, bolt, chamber, releasing the int mag spring and looking thoroughly at the exterior of the weapon I had to ask my local dealer whether it was even used or not. He indicated it was (that's why it was $750.00) and he had just taken it in on a trade for a similar Rem 700 LRT.

I never purchased a firearm new but I have buddies that have and this rifle was in immaculate condition. It was hard to tell it had ever been fired. So I bought it and a $250.00 Bushnell Elite 10x scope which they mounted. I am going to fire it tonight.

Was this a good deal? Is there anything I should have a gunsmith do to it, any cleaning or care tips? Thanks!

Is this rifle at the Powderkeg in Kamloops? If so I know the gun and the prev. owner. He traded it because he traded for an LTR in 308 that was a twin to the one he already owns in 223.

If this is the same rifle, it has less than 300 rounds through it. It is a steal.

Very good deal and a great place to start, you now have unlimited potential for a long range weapons system, but as it sits now, you will have lots of fun and sould get excellent shooting out ot atleast 600 yards minimum.

Yes Obtunded, you guessed right! Good to know it was well taken care of!

I took it to the range and it was beautiful, I don't have much experience with rifles but since I normally shoot 30-06 and don't notice the recoil I found the .308 pleasant to shoot. My very first shot of my first grouping @ 100m was touching the thin lines that meet right at the very center of the bullseye. I pulled one shot after that but otherwise they were almost all touching each other, I will try to post some pics if I can.

I have the same rifle, it's a tack driver. Good buy.

Maybe get the trigger lightened, that's about the only thing I'd do sooner rather than later. Except maybe get a better scope! ;)

Mittens, since you got yourself a nice shooting iron, you should come out some of the KTSA matches. The Frosty Farky is coming up im late September and it is at your home range to boot!

like the other post u got a steal...i payed 600 for the same rifle and 350 for a bushnell 3200 10x scope

enjoy it also try 168gr a-max with 46.3 gr of varget and WLR primers and seat the bullet for a over all length of 2.928" shoots extremely well in my rig

"Slainte" will

Thanks for the tips guys.

Obtunded I am not yet confident with my rifle shooting ability I think the old guys would work me pretty easily! When are the matches?

Mittens,

http://www.ktsa.ca/upcoming_events.htm

There is a 1000 yard fun match in August. That's a good place to start since you always get to blame the wind for a crappy shot, and it seems its more about the beer afterwards than getting good scores. Powderkeg Mark organizes it

The Frosty Farky is a great match. There are a couple of guys that are a tiny bit more serious than the rest of us, but the majority of us just love another excuse to go shooting and look at cool guns. You are a shoe-in for top new shooter!

There are two words that are NOT in the KTSA vocabulary: snobs and cliques. These are all great guys and shooting gurus that love to talk guns and share what they know.
