Island Deer, what gun & caliber?

Island blacktails are my main quarry. To date, I've taken them with the following:

Parker-Hale 1200C, 270 Win, 130gr PSP (1), 140gr TSX factory load (1) (before I started reloading), and 2 with the 110gr TTSX. After using the TSX/TTSX I decided to stick with them. Excellent DRT performance. The 130 PSP kill was not DRT (walked about 30 yards and collapsed) but the bullet came apart and there was meat loss (it was a short range kill). Turned me off using them.

Savage 340, 30-30, with brass trimmed extra short and loaded with the little bitty 110 gr TTSX. 2 with this combo, both DRT.

Husqvarna 640 in 9.3x62, 250gr TTSX. 1 so far. Overkill to be sure, but no meat loss (through the ribs). DRT.

was wondering about the expansion of the tsx and ttsx with the small body but seems you got answered that part. thanks for the real life feedback.

so, seems a .308 it is.

anyone know where I can source a 16 - 18" full contour barrel for a T/C Pro Hunter? forgot I had the action/frame, just need a barrel. :)

.308 is a good choice... you can use "reduced/managed recoil" loads when you expect to be hunting thick forest cover, and full power loads if hunting where open cuts are a possibility.

I have a Browning Micro Medallion chambered in 284win. It's a nice compact rifle with a 20" barrel, Brownings version of the M7. I got a Leupold 2-7 scope mounted on it. It's a nice rifle for the Island. It's a snappy little bugger though. :)

I LOVE the 284 Win Too - I have a Custom Built Rem Mountain Rifle with a Leo 3.5-10 VX 3 B&C 22" barrel at less then 6.5 lbs - Its BUCKY too ! RJ

I would say you need more punch on the south end of the bear.

Could be, and if so, ;) even more so on those bigger Bears on the North end of the island. Does bring to mind though, a story I heard about the comments of a native hunting guide. This was somewhere west of Williams Lake or Quesnel. Supposedly he was discussing his take on his shots of preference or shot placement on Grizzly and why. With the assortment of firearms those being guided had and considering the game in question, they were puzzled when he told them all he used was a 30-30. His choice of first shot, when possible, was through the hips. Anywhere else, and if only wounded, it could still come at the shooter. His experience was that the shot through the hips would basically anchor it, then he'd go in and administer the kill shot. ;) South end theory??

Hmmmm... I wonder how many times he pulled that one off? And if he is still with us? ;)

Couldn't tell you but apparently he guided in the area for quite a few years so I would assume, it probably happened on more than one occasion. The guys that told me and verified the story, ranchers in the area, weren't known for embroidering hunting stories. ;) About women and drinking beer, yes but not when it came to hunting. The choice of a 30-30 on Grizz is living on the edge to my way of thinking. And, speaking of 'living on the edge', another such tale and photo headed your way via e-mail. Enjoy :) .

I have only ever hunted little deer on Haida Gwaii, once in my life and I decided to take my ultra light 700 Ti in 300 WSM..............it worked, killed the sh!t out of them.......

Hunting Haida Gwaii is something I haven't done in B.C., ;) yet :). Two quick questions, what would a 'good sized' Deer weigh? And, fairly thick close conditions or lots in the way of open logging slashes??

The one time I hunted in Haida Gwaii in the early 70's, this was all I used to take 6 of their deer with. No drama, just meat.

My first rifle was a .22 Cooey senior, handed down to me after use by Dad and his younger brother. My uncle told me my Dad, over a couple of years, had 'put to rest' couple of Mule Deer in their parents front yard about 80km west of Edmonton.

My Model 39 started out with the pistol grip stock with long fore end, but I reshaped the stock to better suit my sneak hunting methods. I reckon a rather large amount of game, both large and small, has been gathered over the years using the ever reliable Cooey. My one is with me till I tip over.:)

Passed mine 'down the line'. My Son in Horsefly has it now :) .
