It is illegal to hunt wild boar in Alberta

Still waiting for those smarter than me to explain why the Americans have this problem with as far as I can tell zero restrictions on hunting them.
Because they have 100x the boar population as we do, and only 10x more people to hunt them. That quite literally makes their situation exponentially different. If you need me to explain what exponentially means i can do that too. You did the right thing by asking for help.

Not sure an earnestly asked question was deserving of that level of condescension, but I guess turning it up to 12 is the MO around here at times.

I am curious how a jurisdiction with unlimited hunting of feral hogs has had the population explode and expand as much as it has. Surely that is a reasonable thing to ask in the broader context of "can hunting help control the feral hog population." I understand your point on relative populations, but surely the Americans didn't always have 100x the hog population, and yet back in the day hunting didn't solve it.

So because at one point in history a people didnt take hunting seriously as a means of wildlife management, but engaged in it for sport and casual meat harvesting, hunting can never work in another geographical location at another point in history? Is that honestly what youre going with? The US at no point was trying to seriously reduce the boar population until relatively recently, after they let the population absolutely explode by failing to manage it in any meaningful or organized way. Claiming we in Canada cannot possibly help control our tiny in comparison boar population using organized hunting as one of the tools is just beyond ridiculous. Constantly rephrasing the perceived issue without providing any realistic alternatives also makes the situation worse.

Problem in Texas is there is no crown or public land so even thou pigs are open season the places to hunt them are all pay to hunt areas. So pigs have a lot of places to live and breed.
Most of the pig hunting in Texas is done at night, unless you are using a helicopter to herd them. Pigs have no sweat glands so they are nocturnal for the most part in 90 deg+ days. Been there 4 times and all sightings were at night using thermal imaging. Lots of cattle mixed up in the fields so you have to be careful. The breeding season is all year. I doubt hogs breed in Alberta or Sask in winter but I could be wrong. Traps work if the population is high. Hope to go there again this spring. Last year March it was 90 deg F in west Texas making it pleasant to be outdoors at night, sleep during the day. No licence needed, no orange clothing, no restrictions on firearms and you get to use all those hi-tech night vision toys we can only dream about here.

The wife and I are going down to San Antonio to go Heli hog hunting and have also booked a night thermal shoot. Can't wait.

Probably yes.

Why let shooters, hunters and sportsmen take care of the problem for free and have fun doing it when govt can waste millions screwing it up and ensure nobody has any fun.

Not only are governments expert at reducing or eliminating fun they are also very proficient at spending money unnecessarily and achieving worse results

Why can't they do something similar here. Thermal night hunts and heli hunts. Bet the population would go down with no cost to the government. And some entrepreneur would have a business and an income and pay all kinds of taxes.

Boar population control has to a big extend to do with harvesting the right animals out of a group ("Rotte") and understand their social behavior.

Technology is secondary.

It's a well known fact among boar hunters in the Black Forrest, that if you shoot the wrong sow at given time, the "Rotte" will become "rauschig", meaning all female sows are fair game for breeding - the hunter collapsed the breeding hierachy in the group !

In no time you'll end up with 50 piglets instead of 10...

So,if we exclusively hunt sows,no piglets, right? Is that how the Germans are managing the sounders? Why can't we do the same here?

The smartest post in all of the 4 pages...no regs no law breakers simple as that.

That simple thinking is the exact reason which got the US pig population to where it is today. That strategy obviously didn’t work, yet people here are arguing for the same thing to happen in Canada.

Reading about why hunting doesn’t work is actually interesting learning…
