It' was bound to happen...

I guess the real question is:

Does Vortex sell quality optics, or junk with a really great (zero deductible) insurance policy?

On the shooting course I went on all of the vortex scopes (including mine) went down. Just watched a Tiborasaurus Rex video where he states that the vortex scopes on his course went down as well. There's a reason that they're always up for sale and cheaper than the rest.

Generally I just sit on a bench and try to make small groups at various distances with my rig. The Vortex was performing admirably in that role. It was the fall that sent it to the grave.

I have several vortex scopes - none of them have ever had any issues at all. One has been with me over many miles, bounced around in my truck and gone hiking in the bush, and never an issue, holds zero like a champ.

The purpose of this thread is to chronicle the journey one takes when utilizing their advertised VIP warranty. I was clear it was not a place to bash or to praise, simply to observe the process.

Lol... I get a kick out of comments like this. No details on what models they were or conditions. Personally I own 7 Vortex products, 4 of them are Razors, 3 are Vipers. The only one I had go down was my Razor binos... Because I dropped them out of the truck onto the concrete. They still worked but the focus knob was a little messed up. Of course Vortex is going to have more products on the resale because they sell a ton more than the other companies... It's like the same question just the other day on here "Why are there so many glocks on the EE?" It's because there's so many glocks out there! and people are just looking to try something different.

I think the number of pro shooters in the PRS series using Vortex and winning speaks for themselves vs what you and some unknown class mates did on a mickey mouse course or some Trex guy did.

I don't own a single Vortex product but reading these posts the same characters come out and parrot the nonsense where it isn't even relevant to the topic posted.

I am very interested because seriously considering the x25 Vortext Viper HST for long range

I apologize for replying in a public forum with my opinion to the question GMC403 asked earlier and not staying on the original topic. Won't happen again. Obviously Vortex makes some products that people like because if they didn't, they wouldn't still be in business. Thank you TacticalCanuck for documenting your process with their VIP warranty.

Last Saturday was clear enough where I am to get out and do some 200 yard gong shooting. My son, 14 years old (has his own membership card) decided to come with me to the club. Why? We were shooting my long range (short range) rig.

Ruger Precision Enhanced in 5.56 (hey it's only 200 yards, the 308 seems like over kill no?) topped with a Vortex Viper PST ($1,399) scope.

We were on our last mag of 10 each. He took his shots - he did admirably well landing 8 of the 10, and then stood up. As he turned away from the bench, the rifle (which is totally top heavy with that scope when on a bipod) and a little nudge was enough to send the rifle over, scope first, onto the concrete ground.

The turrets were mashed, but still turned. there were scrapes in the finish. So I re-zeroed the rifle in 3 shots, and the zero wouldn't hold. When I tried to change magnification, it was froze up. The scope was pooched.

SO, off to home. I found the vortex canada website, downloaded the warranty paper, filled it out, packed it up, and put it in the mail. They got the scope tuesday. I haven't been contacted by them nor have I tried to contact them - I simply followed their instructions on the website.

This little thread will chronicle the experience, as it unfolds. Why? They say they have a VIP warranty. They say no matter what, if the scope breaks they will deal with it. My scope broke.

This isn't a flame thread, or a praise thread (not yet anyway, I hope it turns to praise). It's observations from the POV of someone who is doing what is asked of them and seeing what happens.

The facts

Feb 24 - Scope Broken in bizarre gardening accident (kicking up dirt at 200 is gardening of sorts, is it not? Planting 55 grain lead buds?)
Feb 27 - Scope Received (with signature) by Vortex Canada
Mar 1 - notified by Vortex Canada of scope received and processing started. ID issued.

Well, having owned a few Vortex scopes AND having had to deal with warranty issues with one of them..the experience was exceptional. They do go above and beyond, so I have every confidence they'll take care of you. Can't speculate on repair/replace as I didn't see the damage...but either way, I think you'll be pleased with the outcome. If anything "good" came from this experience, I bet your son will be 10X more careful with your gear going forward. lol Hey...accidents happen..right?

Not all of us can afford top-tier S&B/Nightforce-level optics, myself included. I ran a Viper HS on my .223 for years, and it reliably helped me send countless varmints to the great hay field in the sky. Never had a single issue and for what I got for it when it was sold~I HONESTLY should have kept the thing. Very decent scope.

No need to worry about dealing with Vortex with their warranty, you'll be taken care. Warranty is one of the things they're very good at.

The Warranty was a major reason I bought vortex. Only have the one, but it's been a good scope and I'd definitely consider another next time I'm buying glass.

What I find funny is that vortex started doing the VIP warranty..... and with so much success Bushnell does it too now...

I Have had to use the VIP warranty when my gun slipped out of my hand while putting it in my safe.... fell right onto the top turret.... free repair.
not bad for a $1000 scope.

Most people take care of their stuff... but accidents happen.

And while most people buy one high end optic... vortex people usually have more.... I have had 6 over the years... so they can afford to replace one once in a while.

A friend in the real world knows a fellow who works for the home office in the US. He says the warranty sells optics like hotdogs at a ball game. You just can't pass it up. I've got 6 or 7 vortex optics. If they are getting quality parts and labor in the Philippines for the same dollar value as say the US to peso, well they could give away optics and still have 6 vacation homes. Come to think of it I wonder who owns vortex.

Looking forward to posting a real update.

There are already dozens of threads on this site about people utilizing Vortex's outstanding warranty. Whether that's a good thing is up to each individual to decide for themselves I guess.

Well nothing new yet - no email, no update - no decisions they have chosen regarding my personal property have been shared. Wondering if I should request an update. If they sent it off to the U.S (I'm sure they do it in batches and when they have enough to make it cost effective) it could be even longer. Be nice to know what I'm looking at.

I hope they keep you in the loop. Who knows you may have a new scope in the mailbox tomorrow.

I reached out and pleasantly asked if they had any information and they said it was 'in the que' - guess that means its not been processed yet beyond acknowledging they have it. A free fix is a free fix. The sticker on that scope 1399.99 + tax and the new gen 2 are priced at 1599.99 + tax.

As an aside I was looking into sightron scopes on the weekend. Seems small bore sniping groups love em!

Update: Notification received from Vortex Canada that the scope has been replaced with the same model and it has been shipped - they provided a tracking number.

Have to say, that it is really not painful at all - the worst part of it all is trusting that they are going to live up to their word - and - so far it certainly seems like it. Looking forward to checking it out when it arrives. And, it seems, just in time for the nice wave of above zero temps and clear skies that herald the starting of spring.

Last update unless the discussion continues.

March 20 - new scope arrived, fresh in the box. Same model as the model damaged. Couldn't be happier, and the turnaround time was awesome - all it cost was $20 to ship the damaged scope in.

Item dropped in the post on Feb 24 (pick up on Feb 25) - replacement arrived exactly 25 days later. Under the 4-6 week promised time too. WTG Vortex Canada!

Old thread but our experience mirrors my own only mine was an original Sparc. Mine was replaced with a Sparc2. I have a Viper mounted on my PPQ which works great. I have remounted it twice and it retained zero each time. Great product with a no BS warranty reminiscent of the warranty I have on my Dillon 550B.

Take Care

Bob

While the "no fault" warranty may seem like a great service, it's always been a red flag for me. In order for Vortex to offer this, their margin of profit must be monumental. They don't seem to fix anything, just replace, which would indicate that their product costs less than the labour to fix it.
I had a 20 year old Swarovski scope I sent in that had the logo missing, nothing else was wrong. They tore it apart, replaced some lenses, erector assembly, resealed and glued on a logo. All free of charge. But they didn't send me a new scope. I guess they had confidence in this old one being a quality product.
