My first and second deer were shot with a 30-30, M94 with 170 grain Imperials. Here's the story.
A much younger dogleg walks to and sits by a stook of square bales on a tiny stubble field. Within minutes 4 deer including a 3x4 buck and 3 assorted skinheads enter the field within 50 yards. Bang, the buck drops. Bang, a doe drops. Buck gets up, and not knowing where I am moves closer. Bang, buck goes down. Doe gets up. Bang, down. Buck gets up and moves even closer. Bang. Doe gets rear legs under itself, and pushes itself into the bush. dogleg follows, and bang, doe dies. dogleg buys a .270..................things improve. I like my 30-30s for shooting cast bullets and playing. For hunting there are so many better choices.

I would like to be listening to you when you have had a few.....I would lay ten to one that you can spin a great yarn.

Not as funny as it may seem, we have a Pro Trapper here who kept regaling me with tales of his 400 yard shots, I got so sick of his bull that I went out to the range and watched him sight in.
His 100 yard sighting in was done on the fifty yard line, the twit thought that the fifty yard line was 100 yards....I will leave it you to work the rest of his yardage out.

If you can't drop a deer at 50 yrds with a 30 30, don't blame the calibre!!
Things improved with a 270,.... how? Did you give it to someone else to shoot your deer,

Yes, I do. The hits were good, the shots were easy and if the deer would have left my sight they would have been dead just as fast. As it played out they popped right back up and stood there so I just kept knockin 'em back down. I was about 14 at the time and wasn't taking any chances.
To this day I will always shoot a hit and standing animal again if at all possible, and I've since shot a couple hundred various hooved critters from 20 to 3500 pounds. None of them were with a thutty-thutty.If I want to shoot a slow bullet like a 30-30 I use a muzzleloader and gain a season. Actually though I've got my Savage up to 2600 fps with 250s and 72 grains of H4198 so that doesn't apply anymore. If I can carry a centerfire, chances are it will have a muzzle velocity of from 3000 to 3500 fps. I still shoot the old crowbars, but like I said they are just cast bullet plinkers to me now. The world is full of better hunting calibers.

You start a post asking how people feel about 30-30s, then don't like it when someone doesn't love it? If you want blind acceptance call your mommy, or get a dog.

No. I said in a post about 3 back that no one has to love the calibre. I think that your poor marksmanship at 50 yrds isn't a good arguement against the calibre.

I did go get my mommy, and she is still laughing that you can't effectively shoot at 50 yrds with a 30 30.

Yes, 6 hits in six shots for a 14 year shooting at his first deer in a multi-tag, multi deer scenario probably isn't up to your newfy level of markmenship, but it's my story.Get over yourself.

6 hits, 6 shots. 2 at 50yrds, 4 more shots inside of 50 yrds. Deer finally dies.

I understand you may have been 14, and that you may have thought you're shots were good, but come on.. you can't dis a calibre if you can't do your part. Sure it may have been due to age or inexperience, but it certainly wasn't cause it was a 30 30

I often take my 336LTS Marlin in 30-30 when tending baits. I like it. It's really handy (16 1/2" barrel) when carrying other stuff in and out. If opportunity arose I would use it for bear with my handloads (170 SpeerFN at 2175MV). But when actually waiting out a bear I use one of my more muscular 35s.
We always blame the gun or caliber...never our selves...
For any calibre ,bullet placement within its range and design is the prime factor in its effectiveness.
The .30-30 within the range it was designed to work in is a great cartridge.My Dad used his iron sighted Winchester Model 94 .30-30 with great success on deer and moose.With this same rifle using iron sights I won a local shoot one time shooting at a circle spinner target at 65 yards.In doing so I bested others using iron and scoped sighted .308's .30-06's etc.
Have shot deer with a Winchester Model 55 .30-30 with no trouble.One shot kills were the norm.
