some are just too big to eat.

Good to see you out with your dad, Cory. Thanks for the post!

Schwatka Lake is awesome. It's a government stocked lake and well known for their great big lake trout. I'd go back there any time... Nothing nicer than government stocked lakes!

Heading out to Schwatka after supper for lake trout. The canoe is ready! I can pick you guys up if you want.

Ted

I've never pulled a laker out of Schwatka but I've got some really nice pike on the Riverdale side. Big grayling too.

I think it would be too much of a paddle, even for you, but thanks! :)

i never seen Ted paddling but his lovely wife yes.

if i want to catch trout i fish them on the surface ....

Jonas pike is our favourite fish and we re using in different ways and all of them so good.

thank you for the offer Ted but emma was sleeping before you posted it.

you may have confuse with another lake. this one is not stocked at all. you have a chance to see chinook at the fish ladder later in the season.

it is part of the yukon river there is maybe trout but with activities around i doubt on a big success there especially for big unless you have a secret spot ...

About 27 years ago when I visited the YT with a couple friends for the first time we wanted to do some fishing around Whitehorse. So, off to Hougen's we went to get some info and tackle.

"Schwatka Lake has some good fishing, They put fish in there", the friendly salesman told us. Bingo, we thought! Trying all the tackle he sold and spots he recommended to us to no avail. Maybe not the right time in the year we thought...

Since then I have been flying out of Schwatka with Yukon friends to hunt moose and sheep several times and none of them had ever heard of anyone pulling a lake trout out of Schwatka Lake! So forgive me my sarcasm/irony in earlier post...

Perhaps folks just don't know how or where to fish. Plenty of lakers in Schwatka, even though it's really only a wide spot about 1 1/2 miles long in the Yukon River above the dam that was built in 1958.

It's not the only river with lake trout in it either. The Teslin, the Thirty Mile, and others have lake trout in them, and can be caught both casting from shore and trolling. Lots of lake trout are caught by simply drifting a lure downstream off the Tagish River bridge, and letting the current do the fishing. :)

I have caught lake trout in the Big Salmon River sixty miles downstream from its source, Quiet Lake, while guiding. There is no stocking of lake trout done in Yukon, as they are found throughout the Yukon, Alsek, and Liard drainage systems.

For those interested in how far we have to go to catch trout, the pothole lakes around Schwatka are stocked with rainbows and kokanee, and the bigger one near the right of the screen, Cantlie Lake, with Arctic Char.

Believe it or not, I have caught lakers in Long lake, down Wickstrom. I spoke to the fisheries biologist and there were "<10" released in there from the fish ladder display tank a few years ago. Pretty neat to reel in a laker when you only expect Kokanee salmon.

As far as bears go...now is prime time. Go looking!

well with the help of our why not? called as well MR 9.3x62 or .366 wagner and the great discussion we had yesterday here are some pictures.

the recipe is on recipe in the hunting part of the forum.

that looks tasty!!

We are still ice fishing for kokanee here in the BC 100 mile house area LOL
not for long though as the weather is turning.

I am curious as to how big the kokanee get in the lakes up there and are they targeted hard by the locals ice fishing?
