It's up to you to arm the Canadian Forces...which sidearm do you supply them with?

IIRC that was a very long time ago, and imporvements have been made to the Glock immediately afterwards. Frame rails were too small in the back.

It then succeeded the test which was throwing the gun 20m out on concrete I think.

These two guns you would only trust your life to have failed a bunch of sand and crud tests the Glock passed with ease. Doesn't mean they're bad guns (I have a W-German P226 that is 100% reliable and would trust my life to it), it means that saying they are more reliable than a Glock is ridicule.

And let's not talk about the fact that the FBI isssues various Glock models (22, 23, 17, 19) and allows many other models to be carried, only the SWAT members get anything else than a Glock, and it's a 1911.

And most of the units that have a 1911 as an option have actually gone to the Glock.
 
If they combined the CF, RCMP and all other sidearm requirements for the Feds and any provinces/local governments who wanted in -they'd be looking at slightly less than $200 a gun for Glocks and M&P's (assuming an order size of around 40-50K units). We need to accept that this isn't a "huge" order in the scheme of things, the French put all their orders together and bought half a million (IIRC) guns from Sig, with no local production contract at all.

The French got about 250k SigPro's, with which they had huge quality problems afterwards. Sauer had cut back on the quality in order to the the contract.

Send them in to Colt Canada for some upgrades. Install some Novak sights, an ambi safety and maybe some new grips and you're good to go for another few decades. Replace all the springs too, especially in the mags.

Nothing wrong with the Hi-Power, it's just as good now as it was then, ours just need a little update.

The 1911 fan boys are living in a dreamland. We are a NATO country, the 9mm isn't going anywhere. If we're stuck with 9mm you might as well go with Browning's other great pistol design, the Hi-Power.[/QUO

I agree. I am currently serving and have worked with both our sig 226's and our bhp. I like the bhp, I find it easy to shoot and carry. Though, getting all the mag disconnects removed would be nice. And ALL the old mags replaced. My company had the majority of their mags replaced about 2 years back and we all noticed a big difference. New sights, new mags for the BHP and we'd be cool for another 50 years.

The Inglis are American Standard while the FN Hi-Powers are metric. Might not be the deal you think it is time the Gov't is done with it. Taxpayers in this country aren't going to accept to much more deficit financing so I wouldn't get my hopes up for more funding for more kit anytime soon. We have an Arctic presence to deal with which will be more important than new pistols for the Army, I would think.

Biggest issue with the Brownings is not carrying one in the chamber...which is why the MPs switched to the P225. Actually, the P225 was purchased for the Air Force, but it was too confusing for them, so they gave them to the MPs. The MPs had to cancel their order for the 226, and exchange a lot of the gear they had already purchased (holsters, mag pouches). I'd like to see the CF switch to the P226 myself. It makes the most sense logistically: weapons techs already trained on them, easy transition for the MPs, and the Navy boarding parties are already using them. I just hope they don't go to DAO...I like DA/SA myself.
 
Well, if we've reached a time where its up to me to arm the Canadian forces, we're probably at a point where my sidearm reccomendation won't do much of a difference to fix the sh*tstorm that got me this position. :D
