just bought my first Simonov SKS and have an ATI stock installed. This will be my bush whacker crown land plinker. I'll be shooting it in a few weeks time and sighting it in.

Are these guns way off target, or are they pretty well sighted out of the box? Will it help some to laser bore sight it first?

Mine shot pretty good out of the box, but I wasn't using site targets just shooting bottles and such.

Question about your ATI... did you do the conversion? if so did you buy a new gas tube or did convert the old one? if so was it hard getting the pin out? I ask because I am going to get another SKS soon and get either the Tapco stock or ATI

Thanks

Mine have always been pretty tight out of the box and there chicom so can't be too bad. Maybe adjust the front sight with a punch and hammer if need be. In Russia Sks join you! In Russia club is communist party with free Sks ! Lol

I'll show you mine if you show me yours... $159 from Lever Arms
The 3rd stock and latest rendition of my 1950 main shooter.
- Russian 1950 Tula rifle
- Chinese gas tube & hand guard
- American Tapco 5/20 mag

A real mutt.

I got an armourer to install the ATI and clean off the Russian love grease. Normally I install my own stuff, but because the ATI needs some modification to fit, I figured I didn't want to go through the trouble. I'm going to pick it up from the store after work today.

Because it's just a plinker to me, I'm not going to bother getting the Tapco magazines. Between the Tapco and the ATI irrespective of the magazine, the choice will boil down to whether you want the folding stock feature of the ATI or not. Again, given that this is a bush-whacking gun, the folding stock would be useful to me for stowing away in the trunk.

Very nice, love the black bayonet., I just got the Tapco 5/20 too. Now I want to get another and make it make it black with a Tapco stock... wish I could find a black bayonet at Lever

Ah nice, for me I am leaning toward the Tapco stock because I want to keep they bayonet... unless someone knows of a folding stock with a bayonet cut as well.... that would be my dream

Post pics when you get it home :)

All the SKS's I've seen have been pretty close at 100 yards as they come. A cheapo sight adjustment tool makes life easy with these things. Remember you'll probably need it again because these things are addictive as all heck! I have two, one in a folding stock and one to keep in original format.
Welcome to the club!

While I don't shoot all of mine, the few that I do are bang on target. If you find you require windage adjustments, you can pick-up a fairly cheap SKS/AK sight adjustment tool off of one of the forum sponsors.

They all shoot pretty good out of the box with maybe some minor sight adjustments. THe tool is very useful, and when you clean the cosmo off the thing, get some good penetrating oil on the front sight and give it a good whack to get it to move BEFORE you go to to the range. Very easy to adjust with the sight tool once you have it moving. Did I mention to get it to move BEFORE you go to the range?

My front site moved no prob with site tool right out of box. Is that normal or did i get lucky? It's a '50 Tula if it matters. Haven't tried my '54 yet.

Maybe a bit lucky, many of them are really tight if not dry and seized. Some penetrating oil and a flat punch is often needed to make it move form one side to other a few times. Its easy to snap a new sight tool if the sight hasn't been loosened up ahead of time.
