When I was attending gunshows in Bradenton, FL in the late 1990s there was a U Boat vet who used to have a table chock-a-block with U Boat stuff- bells, whistles, books, flags, crests, photos, badges, beer steins, etc(no fridge magnets though). I used to chat with him. Last time I was there 10 yrs ago he had died, but his wife was still carrying on.

Maybe this fellow was a crew member who decided to bale after eyeballing the chicks on the Florida beaches on his way to a lifelong exile up the Orinoco or the Amazon.

Niels Jannasch was a member of the Kreigsmarine in WWII, he was the curator of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic for a number of years. He was a nice fellow to boot.
