With the locking of the "JARD J180 , new NR but no distributors carry em ?" thread, the following thread is meant to consolidate ongoing info, feedback, and enthusiast builds for the Jard J180.


Sylvestre Sporting Goods in Bonneyville, Alberta will start distributing the Jard J180 in late June to early July. Although they will initially importing complete rifles in .223, they will eventually be importing factory rifles in .350 Legend, 6 mm ARC, .204 Ruger, and 6.5 Grendel.

If you want to build your own, they will be importing build kits, with two kinds of bolts, allowing the following calibres:

The J180 uses a unique direct impingement onto a BCG riding on 180-style dual guide rods a against 180-style recoil springs design. This allows re-use of many parts from now-prohibited firearms. The build kit can be used in concert with AR-15 compatible gas tubes, barrels, gas blocks, handguards, pistol grips, buffer tube/butt stocks, and magazines. The stock Jard trigger is apparently quite good, but can be replaced at the builder's discretion. It does not use a buffer tube spring, so a folding stock adapter can be readily used with it.

As noted in the now locked thread, there is some concern on the providence of the Jard firearm, as there have been issues with prior Jard firearms released in the Canadian market. Sylvestre states they have thoroughly tested the newer J180 firearm for reliability and accuracy; they have enough confidence they spent years getting it through the process to get an FRT entry; a near miracle in these post-OIC times.

Hopefully upon the firearm being released, feedback in this thread can be used to determine the actual quality of this novel firearm, as determined by the community.

People over at the IRunGuns sub-forum indicated they were willing the pay a premium for a now-cancelled svelter 180-based platform with a dust cover, but that was also based on the proven reliability of PWS and Brownell's BRN-180 platform . Whether the J180 has the reliability and functionality to justify a premium for its appearance and ability to use a wider variety of handguards with non-carbine length gas port barrels remains to be seen. Jard also is a maker of premium triggers, so that's a saving when buying a complete rifle, though of course much less of a factor when buying the build kit, as people with those probably have their own chosen trigger.

Should the design prove dependable, I could see the build kit taking some market share from the SBI LPC and MRA Renegade. Those platforms will remain useful for non-restricted SBR bush/truck guns, and long range precision rifles where a bolt would be preferred anyways, but I could see some parts from non-restricted AR-15 alternatives being temporarily reassigned for use on a J180 build kit until the OIC is overturned or FRT challenges are successful. I could also see a few restricted J180s being created for two/three gun purposes from locked away AR-15s.

Hopefully, the platform proves successful for Sylvestre, as more diversity in the Canadian gun market in these trying times is welcome.

I was hopeful for (IRG) that one, or at least maybe some aftermarket uppers for the existing 180’s to Gucci them out

YouTuber 212Driller did a review of the progenitor J48 rifle. Some differences from the video are the J180s charging handle is secured in some manner by the guide rods, the J180 can take any AR-15 handguard (barring fitment issues, like with anti-rotation tabs like with the Renegade) whereas the J48 had a proprietary handguard, the addition of the dust cover, and an overall higher level of finish.

212Driller's J48 had received the upgraded hardened internals used to solve prior issues with the J48. The reviewer seemed satisfied with the rifles dependibility and performance, only noting an occasional issue with light primer strikes on ammo with hardened primers, which he expected to be corrected by a stronger trigger spring provide by Jard.

I think I bought that thing for $500 bucks. Those were the days... Things have nearly doubled in price since then.

Just called Sylvestre, the J180 build kits have shipped from Jard, so warm up your payment cards if you are interested :) . Naturally, with shipping being the sheet show it has been lately, they did not to give a specific arrival or release date, but it is definitely a positive sign these have shipped!
 
I’m gonna be honest man,I had one of the first 10 J48s, that came into Canada.
I’m pretty sure that Dean( one of the owners) told me that, other hand guards were available.

They would have to improve a lot more than the CH,to make this an option.
Let’s hope that’s the case.
