Too me it looks Mint. great find. older growth wood not newer stuff and old world craftsmanship . when people cared . I have shot a Winchester 3030 and a Marlin 3030. I found that the Marlin had less recoil than the Winchester in my opinion. and the Marlin seemed to shoulder and point nicer to this guy. great find . watch buddies and others try to trade you for something else. tell them to hit the road unless it's something that you totally can't be without. good luck finding another Marlin in that condition .Hey everyone! Just recently I got my first hunting rifle, a 1974 JM stamped Marlin 336 in 30-30. I'd like to think I got a decent deal, considering I paid $600 with a box of ammo, and most I see online are closer to $1000. I believe it belonged to a farmer, and probably hasn't been shot in a while given there are only two round missing from the box...and the sticker price for the box is $8.50 for 20 lol. Would love to hear from others if you use these rifles for deer and how you find them! For reference I'm on the east coast hunting fairly heavily wooded areas, not many long shots around here!
Cheers!

I have one pre waffle top.
This is a fun accurate Marlin to shoot.
Pretty much puts silly smiles on the shooters face.
I wish to get it drilled and tapped so it is more attractive for my eyes to shoot.
I’ve bin scolded on numerous ocassions with this idea.
Stock set is wrong and it shure isn’t a collector firearm by any means.
I’ll have until the Kamloops gun show to make up my mind.
I’ll surrender it to a fellow that does a great job on the d&t proceedure.
Couple photos of the old Marlin.
1954 I belief.

How are you with aperture sights? your rifle is d&T'ed on the left side already for a rear peep like a Williams

Thanks for that!yessiree, both Williams and Lyman make one to fit
Redfield maybe too, in the older days iirc
Drill and tap it. Rifles were meant to be used and it isn't a one of a kind collectors piece.I have one pre waffle top.

Mine too is a 1954 version. It has a smooth, matte finish on the receiver top, not the waffle. It came to me already drilled and tapped with filler screws in place. Looked to have never had them out of their holes. Marlin started routine drilling and tapping of the 336 in 1956, however, it was available to have done if you sent them the rifle. I'm pretty sure that was the case with this one.I have one pre waffle top.
