Too me it looks Mint. great find. older growth wood not newer stuff and old world craftsmanship . when people cared . I have shot a Winchester 3030 and a Marlin 3030. I found that the Marlin had less recoil than the Winchester in my opinion. and the Marlin seemed to shoulder and point nicer to this guy. great find . watch buddies and others try to trade you for something else. tell them to hit the road unless it's something that you totally can't be without. good luck finding another Marlin in that condition .

I bought the same vintage rifle a few years ago for $300, but the condition isn't as nice as yours. Don't think mine was shot much as mechanically and bore condition are perfect, just more carry/storage wear and tear. I generally hate the look of scopes on levers...but my 66 year old eyes don't play nice with open sites anymore so I dropped on a rail and a Vortex red dot which works decently.
I have one pre waffle top.
This is a fun accurate Marlin to shoot.
Pretty much puts silly smiles on the shooters face.
I wish to get it drilled and tapped so it is more attractive for my eyes to shoot.
I’ve bin scolded on numerous ocassions with this idea.
Stock set is wrong and it shure isn’t a collector firearm by any means.
I’ll have until the Kamloops gun show to make up my mind.
I’ll surrender it to a fellow that does a great job on the d&t proceedure.

How are you with aperture sights? your rifle is d&T'ed on the left side already for a rear peep like a Williams

I can’t do more than 50 yards or so with peep sights.
Drill and tap it. Rifles were meant to be used and it isn't a one of a kind collectors piece.

Mine too is a 1954 version. It has a smooth, matte finish on the receiver top, not the waffle. It came to me already drilled and tapped with filler screws in place. Looked to have never had them out of their holes. Marlin started routine drilling and tapping of the 336 in 1956, however, it was available to have done if you sent them the rifle. I'm pretty sure that was the case with this one.
