I own a John Deer pellet rifle that I purchased new in the late 1960's or early 1970's. Does anyone know who made these rifles for John Deere?

Thanks

This rifle looks like the inexpensive european (Russian. Czech) rifles that were around in the 70's and 80's. You could buy them for around $49.95 and up. "SIR" in Winnepeg (now Cabellas,81/82) sold these under the "Pioneer" name and they were imported. Two more were imported a year or two later called the "Goldcup" and the "Russian". John Deere may have had a promo with these Rifles. Yours is the first I have ever seen with the JD logo although "DEER" does have a "E" on the end. Your rifle doesn't. It may have got lost with the translator. There may be some one else out there with better info, If yours still shoots it may be worth something to a John Deere collector.

SaddleTramp,

Thank you for your response and for the information.

The time frame that you have stated would be pretty close to when I purchased it. It was purchased from a general sporting goods store.

I'm certain that there were others with this logo, because my brother has one just like it.

As for shooting, I believe that it still shoots about the same as it did when it was new.

Thanks Again

we got ours from "super s" drugs for 25 bucks back in the 60's 19.99 on sale- cheap czech 177s, my brother had one that REVERSED THE RIFLEING in the bore- it started out as a rh twist , then half way down goes to a left hand - good for gophers, however- you didn't have to pump all day like the crosman for about half the price

t-star,

Thanks for your reply.

Well, I guess there are others! Reversed rifling, I don't think that I have ever looked through it. It was years before I had a cleaning rod small enough to clean it.

For one thing, Deere is the way John Deere is spelled, not Deer as on your rifle.

Grizzlypeg,

Thanks for your reply.

That is understood, but as SaddleTramp said, something could have be lost in the translation.

My main interest is in parts if I wanted to refurbish it.

first thing is if there's a seal ( typically leather) - these guns( if you could call them that) are pretty much all the same- give it a good oiling and see if it goes thunk- if it does m then you're home-put the oil in the chamber and let it seep down overnite- just a drop or to to lubricate the piston is all u need

Wheelgunner,

I Don't mean to rain on your parade, but this pellet rifle is not in any way affiliated with John Deere. Having worked for them, I can assure you that they are VERY aware of the design and usage of their logo. I have seen on their website (or it may have been the Deere intranet) an in-depth article on their trademark variations/evolution over the last 120+ years (of the company's 170+). This is not one of them, though I can certainly see how there would be some confusion. Whether or not this logo is intentionally deceptive is hard to say. If a product is "Deer" brand, it doesn't leave a lot of other logical choices for a mascot...

Try to find the article on their website. It was actually quite interesting, even for a non "John Deere Nut" like myself.

Cheers,
GarandLuvr

PS. John Deere has a very nice selection of gun safes, if you are "into" Deere-logo stuff...

Yes, it does have a leather seal and a light oiling is how it has been treated since I have owned it. There is also some sort of seal between the barrel and the air chamber. It almost looks like a thin leather donut. Any ideas?

Actually, it still shoots quite well.

GarandLuvr,

You are not raining on my parade. I really don't care if it is related to John Deere. I would simply like to know who made it.

Actually, I have been on John Deere's site and I have tried to acquire information about this gun, but I received no response.

I've looked at the John Deere/Liberty safes and would love to have one. It will have to wait.

That rifle is around '70s vintage, and of Chinese origin. It should have markings to that effect somewhere on the gun. I have the identical gun, but mine is marked "Pioneer", and I have seen others, most likely from the same factory with "Dog", "Wolf", "Eagle", and a plethora of other markings on them. I'm not sure if your rifle has any relationship to the more current "Fast Deer" guns that Father alludes to, but that trademark does bear some resemblance.

Not unlike the German made Mayer & Grammelspacher guns of the same time period, which were sold under various brand names - "Original", "Diana", "Gecado", "Geco", and "Condor" to name a few.
