Funny enough most anti hunters seem to always use the line "You wouldn't be so tough if you did have your gun/crossbow/etc etc. It isn't a fair fight."

It would seem to be that this is far closer to the fair fight they would want. Using their parameters of course.

Just shows they won't be happy until hunting is banned completely.

Thanks bud but I didn't say I had an opinion on it - I've hunted since I was a kid and taken many an animal thanks.

My question was - is it legal.

I didn't see the other thread, nor do I see an answer in there now that I have.

Primitive weapons season was limited to muzzle loaders, x-bows and bow I thought.
 
Woodchopper could you help me out here? Found the reg book/ guide on line, but could not find out much on what constitutes a primitive weapon...
Page 3 of the pdf file mentions muzzleloaders, shotguns, crossbows & bows for w.m.u. 212 ; page 50 in the booklet. No mention of spears & other tools that can or cannot be used, that I can find? http://albertaregulations.ca/pdfs/hunting-regs/Big-Game-Seasons.pdf

That was the problem hear in Ontario with regards to Antique Firearms. And when I questioned a C.O. his advise about it, was that if there wasn't a specific season where it could be used you would probably be charged with hunting out of season. ie. There is a rifle & shotgun season & if your hunting in the right area & there is a season for it; it makes no difference if it were an antique or a modern day firearm. Since there is no handgun season here, hunting with an antique or modern day handgun will fetch the same charges under the wildlife act. Not to mention any other charges the OPP will level at you...
 
Here we go .. the spear guy in the news

I knew this was going to happen when I saw this posted on CGN a while back. Remember the guy spearing the bear then posting the video? Anyway the news picked it up today here. Whether you agree or disagree with this type of hunting, posting this type of thing, in my opinion, is probably not the right move for anyone involved in hunting or shooting sports. As a side note, when I saw this something seemed wrong with this guy but I wasn't sure what it was. Later I realized that, for lack of a better term, it was his lack of respect for the bear. But I guess that's my old fashioned values showing, and that might be a discussion for another day.

the regulations list what items are prohibited to hunt with.

•an arrow equipped with an explosive head,
•a firearm that is capable of firing more than one bullet during one pressure of the trigger or a firearm that can be altered to operate as such,

•a device designed to deaden the sound of the report of a firearm,
•recorded wildlife calls or sounds, or an electronically operated calling device except; 1) when hunting migratory game birds with the use of calls or sounds that mimic snow geese, or 2) using electronic calls to hunt crows, magpies, coyote, red fox and wolf (using sounds that mimic these animals, rabbits, hares, or rodents).

•a pistol or revolver unless
– the person is a licenced trapper (holding a federal authorization) who is dispatching an animal caught in a trap, or
– it is an air powered pistol or revolver that discharges a projectile at less than 500 feet per second (often used for hunting small game).

•live wildlife,
•a swivel set or spring gun, or
•a poisonous substance or an immobilizing drug.

so if its not prohibited it should be Ok to use. But if your in a "Bow hunting season" and not using a bow you may find yourself in trouble, however in the "general" season you should be good to go hunting with a spear.

My opinion, I am not a lawyer.




Oh and I just noticed I can pack an air pistol to hunt grouse.. :)

•a muzzle-loading firearm of less than .44 calibre,
•a rifle or shotgun in WMUs 212, 248 or 410 (persons hunting under the authority of a Strathcona White-tailed Deer Licence, a Foothills Deer Licence, or an Antlerless Moose Special Licence in Strathcona County may hunt with a bow and arrow, cross-bow, muzzle loader or shotgun),
•a trap,

Never was one to spike the football and my coach always taught us to "act like you've been here before." Meaning don't spike the ball, don't do a facking Motown boog a loo, and don't show your azz when you score a touchdown because "it ain't all about you."

Pretty sage advice for this dude too. I'm sure he's proud of his accomplishment but many will get a sore #### and will see it as spiking the ball.

To be correct: I could hunt deer with a sling shot & 50 cal lead ball & if I was ex I.R.A. I just maybe good at it... Just like this javelin thrower was with a spear...

You do realize that their is some smuck that is going to get raped by some sort of wildlife trying this stuff out; right? It make for a hilarious video, but probably won't do anything for hunting in general...
 
They have a display at the BC museum in Victoria with a full size mammoth replica skeleton. I lingered there with the kids and asked where they thought was the best spot to bring it down. Both kids went with the heart shot. Then I asked them what they thought about trying to get there with a spear.

I had no problem with the kill....... Or the hunt...... This guy obviously practiced and knew what he was doing and was proficient with his weapon..... Sure, his reaction was a bit over the top, but having been in close quarters with live bears, I can understand...... Adrenaline makes people do weird things.......

I saw Tim Wells' spear killed deer and it set off my "personal ethics" alarm, because it was obvious to me that he hadn't done enough practice and made several misses...... But that is my tethers and nobody else's, so I will leave it at that.......
 
It often annoys me when people chastise others reactions to the kill. There is nothing disrespectful with being super excited about taking an animal. It may not be the way you celebrate or respect the animal, but who cares. Do what you want and let others do what they want,
 
We have hunted with hand thrown weapons for tens of thousands of years if not hundreds of thousands of years. Why is this suddenly bad? The lefties are always going on about getting closer to nature but end up being horrified and outraged when someone actually does what they endlessly blather on about. Personally I'd like to see it done with an Atlatle. That is a very cool weapon and one of our first bits of really successful technology.

It used to be that people were proud of their achievements just by sharing the experience with friends and family, or just reflecting on it themselves. With todays social media it sure seems like people require a certain number of "likes" before they feel they've accomplished something. I don't get it.
 
Anti's want to ban hunting period. They don't care how the animals are killed. I don't really care what they think or feel. That bear died faster then other animals in the wild from other predators, including bears killing each other.

I agree with this philosophy...... Were it me, i may have posted it here amongst like minded individuals....... But I wouldn't seek attention on YouTube..... Heck, I barely post my kills here.......

is it legal? yes: so why bother.

we are our worst enemy, seems forget most of our local hunters are against elephant hunting or lion just per say ....
