JR Carbine Unboxing, Firing & Takedown Videos

Yeesh. How many times does the Canadian firearms pricing horse have to be beaten? d:h:

And since you asked (well, not really), here's how I feel (about pricing in general, not just firearms) when I'm looking at a purchase:

1. The price is what it is, where it is, and when it is. If I don't like it at that space/time confluence thingy, I simply don't buy it.
2. Profit is not a bad word. Not even when there are adjectives preceding it.
3. I alone know of an item's value to me.
4. The "buying experience" may well modify what I am willing to pay. For better and for worse.
5. The markets will dictate if the price moves up, or down, or not at all. Patience can be a virtue. Or a waste of time.
6. Alone, or with modifiers, Profit is not a bad word.
7. Need is spelled w a n t.
8. If I can't afford it, I remember that we were given two kidneys for a reason...so one could be sold for quick cash.
9. Cheaper is always better. Except when it isn't.

You sound like some sort of pragmatic son-of-the-soil, Harv. That sort of timeless wisdom doesn't always fly here in Ontario.

Your treatise on pricing, above, should be posted as 'sticky' at the top of every EE forum.

I was thinking this part could be used to improve the stock arrangement. It would have to be milled hollow, but would allow disassembly without tools.

Where do you shovel the coal? :p

Those old South Bends are hot. I wonder what model mine is. 9" throw, 4.25' bed. The westinghouse motor had to be replaced with a more modern baldor though.

Ha ha. You're funny. Not. You can go sit down now.

So I dug out the swivel gopher bench from the back of the shop, and was going to do some accuracy testing yesterday when I ran into a FTE/stovepiping issue in a big way. I had loaded up with American Eagle 115gr to start, but the first two mags had 17 out of 20 rounds that didn't eject, and either stovepiped or were jammed in other interesting ways. Thinking I had screwed something up while doing the takedown video or switching the extractor/ejector, I stopped and did a total disassemble, clean, check and reassemble. Not finding anything there I noticed the mags I'd used were brand new KCI 10/17 (all of the shooting prior to this was with the supplied Glock mag), and using spent brass and dummy rounds I found that the bottom edge of the spent case could juuuust catch the top edge of the next round in the mag when it was coming out of the chamber. Apparently that could act as a premature ejector (maybe I should rephrase that), and was causing the FTE's. I didn't see anything when inspecting the mags, and they didn't appear any different than the others, so I marked them and quit for the day.

So today I loaded every mag with CCI, shuffled them and went shooting. And every round chambered, fired and ejected without a hitch. I then loaded up with the American Eagle, and every round chambered, fired and ejected without a hitch, except for the 2 marked KCI mags which had numerous FTE's again. I then reloaded these two mags with some MFS ammo, and they worked 100%. And when loaded with CCI, they worked 100%. And then I loaded with AE again and...they worked 100%. Hmmmm. Suddenly all is good in the world once again.

So I dunno if there was some flashing, extra spring pressure or what might have been in those two mags that was causing this, or what else might have been the issue. In any case it seems to be cleared up for now, and if nothing else gave me a reason to shoot some more. As Old_Painless says so well...Shooting stuff is fun. :)

Farmer Harv: I ran into the same problem using the same mags (KCI) but with 115 gr UMC bulk pack. 124 Geco & 115 MFS gave no problems. I noticed that the MFS is loaded somewhat stiffer than the UMC to boot.

sorry to hijack the thread, but I replaced the WH motor on mine with a Delta Industrial 3-phase 1hp 220v motor and an IMO Digital Phase Converter. I can now vary my motor frequency with a potentiometer almost infinitely without loss of torque across the pulley settings. BEST MOD EVER.

Nice looking bench. Would you recommend it and what's something like that worth?

It's a pretty good little bench for in front of the shop. Fairly light, mostly sorta solid/a bit wobbly, smooth swivel and a pretty big surface to put stuff on. It also comes apart and folds up easily, which makes it easy to put somewhere in the fall, pile stuff around it and make it difficult to dig out in the spring.

I got it through cabelas.ca for $190 last year, and because of their bizarre shipping rate schedule it only cost $15 to ship. I don't see it listed there any more though, but there are a couple of other models available.

Where it would really shine is in the back of a pickup in a nice gopher patch. It could be taken down so the tonneau cover will still roll for the trip, and then quickly reassembled for a beeeyoootiful elevated swivel shooting position that's nice and comfortable.

But I hear that's illegal. so I would never do that.

Here is another set of targets from today. All were shot at 75m (any further and I'd have to walk uphill through neck deep snow...both ways) off the swivel bench pictured above.

Only the UMC 124gr was shot with ten rounds. The rest are 8 or 9 rounders, as I borrowed a round or two from each box to try a mixed mag load yesterday.

Mant the AE and Blazer grouped nice for 75m. Nice job buddy!!!!!

On another note i got ahold of EMF about the carbine kits for changing calibers and the .40 cal is next month and the .45 acp is a couple months out still. I have ordered my JR already and am also going to get the .45 kit when it comes out. The techs at EMF are going to email me when the kits come out and I will post up a new posting so people know they are available. I do not know if any Canadain dealers are going to bring them in though.

Great! My 9mm carbine is on order too. I would be very interested in a .45 kit as well.

If there is enough interest (and I bet there would be) maybe we could arrange a volume group buy?

I am bugging Juanvaldez to get the conversion kits in when they are available. They are also still toying with the 10mm, that would rule. Thanks Farmer Harv for making the choice to buy this easy for all of us. It is posts like this that make me glad I am a member of this site!!!!!!!

Yes, I'm quite pleased with the CCI group especially, as I have a few thousand rounds of this stuff stocked up. As an added bonus I won't need to worry about recovering brass if I use it for my field load.

As an aside, I was cleaning up the shop and realized I just hit the 10 boxes/500 round mark today. Except for the weird mag problem it's been smooth sailing for a half a case so far, which bodes well for the future. :)

That's good news for you beach ball throwers! Lofting those whoppers downrange from something non-restricted should be mucho entertaining. And satisfying. And expensive. :D
