Judge this bear

Ahhh the old ear test hasn't failed me yet! The color had me though... The only G-bears I have seen were quite brown. Mind you it is always in the summer or fall months.

I haven't hunted bear...I just use it (ear shape test) to know what kinda yogi is fishing near me.

On a side note me and the GF went for a trail ride last evening above Fury Creek/Britannia Beach. We encountered 5 blks in about 1.5hrs.

There was another in the lot across the street from me later in the evening.

Since we're playing along, if Republic doesn't mind....how about this one?

Too easy?

Goes to show how damn hard it can be to judge a bear..and to make sure that you really look it over before shooting. A couple of weeks ago near here a grizzly was mistaken for a black bear and shot by a hunter, who promptly fled..They are still looking for him.

Gatehouse we get some black grizzlies here in central Alberta, and last year one of the guys came onto a big bear down a cutline. It looked like a monster black bear, like in the 8' size and they were getting ready to shoot, when the thing finally turned in such a way that they saw the pronounced shoulder and then the big round head, and of course it was about an 8' black grizzly. Fortunately they waited long enough that they avoided a tragic mistake.

And yeah, there have been 8' black bears shot in the Swan Hills over the years.

hmmm they get much bigger than 8' and black grizzlies the one Tim shot last spring was over 9' and black...

Yup, we get black grizzlies here, too!:)

Last one I saw around here ( about 10km as the crow flies form my door) was black, black...But not that "shiny" black that the black bears have.

The one that was shot illegally was brown however. We get big brown black bears, too!:)

Well I don't know what you're saying. Do you think the grizzlies here are small?

The grizzly shot by Bella Twin, in the Swan Hills was at one time the worlds record. I don't know it's physical dimensions but I would bet it was likely 8-1/2' to 9'. If someone knows they can chime in...
I have personally measured grizzly tracks in this country that were 8" across, which would guesstimate to about a 9' bear. That was in 1982 on the Inverness R. I suspect that bear is now dead.
Back about that same time, I corresponded with a hunting guide that guided for grizzly in northern B.C. That guide had worked in the Swan Hills back in the late 1960's, early 1970's, and he told me that he had never seen bigger grizzlies, outside of Alaska, then what he saw here. That was a long time ago and I forget the guides name. I wonder if I still have that letter?
So the grizzlies here can get pretty big, but I don't know how they are faring these days. We got that grizzly hunt moratorium on now. There have been a bunch spotted in the area, this spring, but every bear that was seen has been small/young bears.

But on the subject of 8' black bear, yes they also grow that big here, but very, very few obviously of course. Ken Walker has a pic of a monster black bear that they shot up here about 15 years ago, that was 8'. An absolute giant black bear!
I've never seen a black bear that went 7', although the bear I shot 2 years ago was pretty close at 6'10".

In B.C. 7' blacks are common. I'd guess the percentage of bears that size in B.C. is definitely higher.

I am hoping again this spring to find one that is over 7'. :)

Looks to me like a 3 or 4 -year old grizzly - weight APPROX 300 to 350lbs
Healthy looking for a spring bear (I'm guessing early to mid march)
I can't tell ### from the photo
You just can't get away from those rounded ears - its a grizzly.

Looks like a small grizzly by the hump I have to say it is tough to judge from one frame sometimes.

I did correctly peg the first bear pic posted as a grizzly though.

Was thrown off for a few seconds by the dark coloring but I'm heading in on a prospecting trip next week and have a limited entry grizzly draw so will also be grizzly hunting or at least get to keep it if I have to shoot one in a defense situation.

The grizzlies in the area I'll be working in are classed as coastal bears and are very dark colored as well.

Would like to get an 8.5' plus grizzly or probably will not shoot we're also looking for a book black bears or 2 and will definately not shoot one unless it is 7' plus.

I guess we got to about 100 yards for those. I would guess the bear is about 6' or just under that; of course it's a young grizzly.

My concern is just like Republic of Alberta demonstrated with his first pic, if you get that bear standing just the right(wrong) way, then a hunter could easily make a terrible mistake and shoot thinking it was a cinnamon bear. So many people want a nice cinnamon bear that sometimes guys move and shoot too fast.
