** June Purchases **

Went to the Castor gun show on saturday and pick up this Lee enfield No.4 mk1 longbranch for 275. It is dated 1943 and has a shiny bore and no pitting from what i can tell. This is my very first enfield and i am very happy with it. Here are the pics...

I also picked up some dies for it, brass, and bullets. EDIT by moderator ... removed some comments .... ;)

Do you guys think it was a fair price? He was asking 350 but my dad got him down to 275 for me. Whats a good load for an enfield?

Your dad can negotiate for me anytime..... he did good ... :)

If the serial number on the bolt matches the receiver tang on the left side, $275 for a solid condition good shooting bore, British No.4 Mk1 Lee-Enfield of any sort would be a good deal. However, for a similar matching early 1943 Canadian No.4 Mk1* Long Branch in what appears to be nice shape, you did very well. In my opinion, it was even worth the $350... :D

Contgratulations... great way to start an Enfield collection.... :)

Congrats on your first Long Branch LE. Every Canadian milsurp collector should have one. ;)

$275 is a decent price for a shooter. Looks like someone went to town on it with the last three of their SIN (190), probably in the 60's when every bozo felt compelled to mark their possessions with an etcher or a stick on label. :rolleyes: The old guys can relate to that practice.

That cuts down on its value as a collector piece, but not as a shooter. I have one with the complete SIN, and I'd like to track the guy down and let him know where his gun ended up.

That is a nice enfield! The hollowed out bolt handle - is that normal for a LB No4? I thought only JC's had that?

I believe that the 1930s No4 trials rifles & 1941 No4s built from trials componants and to the original drawings ALL have the hollow bolt knob.

From my observations of original No4s:

All BSA No4s have the hollowed out bolt handle.

1941 LBs have the hollowed out bolt handle. 1942 on solid

Savages I've seen both ways into 1942

Maltby assembled componants (from other mfg) into rifles (I've seen them both ways).

Never seen a Faz No4 with hollow knob (don't recall seeing a '41 Faz)

Maltby also made parts, aside from assembly. I've seen Maltbys made entirely of maltby proofed parts.

Faz did make hollowed bolt handles for No.5 carbines and also used some on No.4Mk2 production post-war.

Worst case, your rifle could be a LB rebuild and got a replacement bolt. LB didn't mark their FTRs, so it's a tough call. Any wartime LB rifle that's parkerized is a post-war rebuild though - that much we do know.

good price still for a mis matched bolt. Is the bolt a longbranch bolt?
