Jungle Carbine Velocities

Great bush gun for deer, moose ,elk and bear, anything you hit at 100 to 150 yards in the boiler room is going down. I have a 1946 year of manufacture jungle carbine love it. It needs a re barrel as accuracy is now suffering due to a worn out barrel, but I have a gun safe full of modern options to choose from. Still love that Ol jungle though. Enjoy it !

If anyone has first hand chrony data from factory ammo or handloaded ammunition fired from a Jungle Carbine I'd love to read about it. Otherwise this thread has been a mistake.

Interesting. Don't hear that too often.

I have a 46' Jungle, and over my chrony (using 180gr Winchester power point) they shot between 2190 f/s and 2250 f/s. I think that's plenty fast enough for bears, moose, and deer.

It's hard to discount a tried and true battle rifle in .303 thats been through 2 world wars (granted the jungle was produced in the 2nd world war with a 18.5 inch barrel for fighting in the Pacific jungles) , power wise the cartridge ranks between the .30 .30 Winchester and slightly less powerful than the .308 Winchester, with a rapid bolt, 10 shot clip, the Brit has been manufactured up until approx 1954, used in all the commonwealth countries for years and has taken game all over the world. This beast has functioned reliably in muddy warfare trenches and put meat on the table for over 100 years. Yes it has earned a place as one of the greatest rifles of all time. Overshadowed now by wildcat cartridges and new "improved" factory offerings, the old Brit still holds a place in my heart. Amen !!

I was hoping for some first hand accounts not a rough generalization I could have pulled up from nothing.

According to my log book, my #5s are about 2200 fps with military ball ammo, plus or minus about 50 fps. My full sized #4s are about 2400 fps.

There can be quite a variation of velocity from one brand new rifle to the next. This variation is bigger in used rifles, especially in milsurps.

I inherited an LE Jungle Carbine. Just curious what sort of velocity to expect from factory and/or handloads..?

About 150 to 200 fps less than a full sized rifle.

OP is too lazy to use google so he comes here to asks a common sense question, you give a solid answer, OP then pisses on that answer and then you come back to contribute further. Ganderite, you Sir are a gentleman.

Ganderite spends a good amount of time at the range & this is obviously fueling his vast reservoir of patience. Dumbass responses like the ones from the op are the reason many in the know don't bother posting anymore.

It's a good thing that game animals don't read ballistics tables or carry chronographs as they probably would refuse to fall over and die when you smack them with a 180gr round nose bullet from a No5 JC.;)

I've been using one since 1962 (yes, I confess to installing a Bishop butt with a Monte-Carlo comb and white spacer and having it d&t for a Weaver base) and it has gotten me a lot of nice mulies and whitetails over the yrs and even a nice moose and bear. I think the farthest I ever shot anything with it was probably 125 yds, never needed to shoot at a longer range. It got me my 2 biggest whitetails, both shot @ about 25 yds in a driving blizzard in SK and the heavy timber in NB. It is the real ticket for a bush rifle;light, fast, and hard hitting.

You probably won't like it. I'll do you a huge favour and take it off your hands so you don't have to bother yourself with all of this grief.

In support of Ganderite. He is a wealth of knowledge. I've read his posts for years. Can't remember a piece of "bad" information. I've also attended a couple of his vintage rifle shoots so have met him in person. Probably fits the definition of Gunnutz (if there was one) better than 99% of us using this site.

It is easy to be rude to someone who has the decency to try and answer a question. There is no chance of a good slap in the chops!

I was looking for information from members, if I wanted answers from Google I wouldn't have bothered asking here. The funny thing is I actually did Google it and didn't find much. I'm just ignorant though don't mind me. If you think my response was rude maybe the Internet isn't for you. I'll get off my ass and buy another chrony and post the results. I'd hate for some other guy to ask the same question and have to wade through all of this to get answers from two people.
