Jus' Wondering... Deploying to A'stan... What optic would you choose for C7A1 / C8

First off never assume, but from my understanding most of the Haji's dont have NV capability. That said, lights are only on when you need them, sights i.e. eotech, aimpoint etc have no light signature on the muzzle end of the sight.

I too used irons on 1-06 and plan on upgrading for 1-08. I think that that the set up I will go with is the Eotech 522 with and aimpoint 3x on either a quick twist mount or sampson flip mount. I have considered the SB short dot but I think that a) its price prohibitive for me b) I think it is a bit high profile, I have also considered the TA31 DOC but discounted because of again a)price b) Is geared predominantly towards long distance as opposed to CQB and c) I think it would be difficult to get a proper cheek weld with the Dr. Optic sitting so high.

I think that the eo/3x combo is the right set up for me because it is low profile, it is geared towards CQB but can quickly get magnification for tgt id.

Roger that GT ive tried the TA31DOC with armour and plates and ####, it was still to high for my stubby little neck! Optics, like boots, need to be a personal choice IMHO.

I have heard bad things about the Spectre, in fact MANY bad things. I definitely like the concept but until Larue comes out with a mount for it its not happening for me. Id rather spend my money on a slightly inferior, in terms of capability, set up that I have complete confidence in, as opposed to one that is allegedly the be all end all that will possibly fail when it counts. Different ball game on the two way range as many of you know, most better than I.

If I have the money I would get the new SpecterDR. I think that's the right model? Red dot. Variable power from 1x to 4x. The perfect blend of CQB and field firing capabilities. I think it's around $1400, so out of my price range.

From entities that have tested the SpectreDR -- I would give it a thumbs down. Loss of ZERO -- and ZERO that changes from 1 to 4x -- USSOC required the DR Optic addition so the troops could leave it at 4x and thus not deal with the floppy zero. Add in the ARMS mount issue. You are much better served with the TA31DOC or a S&B Short Dot -- heck for same price (ish) you can get a NF 1-4 and Larue mount.

YMMV -- but ask yourself IF USSOC and CANSOF units that can get anything they want dont use it....

Keep in mind my comments are based for someone going in harms way. You may be working complex terrain one day - and then out in the open the next -- and even in complex terrain you may be be required to try to ID a potential target at longer ranges -- or ID something with a small profile.

In a CF Infantry section/platoon it is possible to get away with a combination of optical choices - as you will be working in a team primarily and you can benifits from the pro's of one's optic while using the team setup to minimise the con's of it.
As well if your working in smaller niche roles you can tailor the platform for the expected role -- and go in knowning that you have accepted that if placed in a situation outside your tailored bubble you will have shortcomings.

Yeah that is what I thought the mount doesn't look very durable to begin with.

what about the Eotechs that we see over there are those provided by the forces or personally bought?

They're personal kit.

If you see anything on a C7 over there that isn't an Elcan, chances are very likely it's pers kit... foregrip rails, vert grips, lights etc...

Right on

Then I'll probably stick with what is tested then, Eotech and the issued Elcan C79A2.

EOTECH's are issued -- I would say 99% of the ones you see are issued...

ert -- stay in you lane - I HAD an EOTECH ISSUED when I was in AFGHANISTAN WITH THE CF...

EOTECH is issued to some, surefire's are issued to basically everyone, PAC/ PEQ 4/2 issued, forearm rails are usually personal kit, vert grips usually personal kit.

I heard some guys were having issues with the issued EoTech's. Basically they were getting beat up and continually reissued, I dont know or have personal experience with this as I wasnt issued one :( .

Phil -- yeah problem with the EO's is some have been in Theatre since 2003...
Guys leave batteries in them that leak and corrode -- I took four apart and cleaned the battery compartment and the contacts and got them back up and running --

Like the Surefires that have died..
You can simply expect kit to soldier on in Afghan for year on end.

I was told that the CF only bought an initial order of EO techs, and do to use they are starting to run low on stock. I had to buy mine but I have and AR at home so i don't mind putting out the cash.

My apologies then... I haven't been over there yet so I don't know FIRSTHAND what YOU might have been issued, but a lot of my friends have been over there and they weren't issued them. I'm just passing down what I have heard and what I expect for when I head over. I may not be as hard as you, but that doesn't mean I can't say what I've heard.

Then your friends aren't 031. I was over there in '03 on roto 0. A couple of months into the tour each section received two flattop C8's (still had the 14.5" skinny barrel) with Eotechs. I imagine that they have been used over there ever since.

What do your friends do in the military? If they are clerks, cooks, supply, etc.. then don't expect them to have any sort of gucci kit, that is normally reserved for the soldiers.

Keep the sarcasm in check, your initial statement read like fact, and it was not. It was a completely disinformed opinion passed off as gospel.

I agree with Boris er Joey, whoever;) that I dont mind putting up the cash for a proper system. Although Eo-Techs are issued, not to everyone. If my primary wpn is going to be either a C8 or C7 I will purchase an Eotech. If I get issued one then bonus, I will use the army issue one and most likely sell of lend out the one I brought, if I am not issued one then I can use my own.

When I think of the cost of kit, I just put it side by side with the cost of my life. In Canada I am not willing to spend a ton of money on kit, but over there.. damn right!

I'm thinking about the TR21 Accupoint too.

Anyone running one on an AR? I'd like to see a pic of one mounted to get a better idea of the size.
cheers

I am sorry if my comments came across like I know all, because I'll clearly admit that I don't. I am 031 myself as are my friends (among other trades) but I guess I didn't get the whole story from them. I didn't mean for that first post to sound like gospel. I intedended it to be my opinion from what I've seen and heard, but I can see how it didn't come across like that now.

Again I'm sorry for the misinterpretation of my initial post and the ensuing off topic posting there-after, so I'm going to refrain from commenting further.

would an aimpoint be sufficient? I mean for the KISS method and $$$. I know that there is no perfect sight. But for a person who has limited funds (namely myself) would this sight be okay? you thoughts would be appreciated. Note I am going on the next roto.
