Just bought my first Sks /updated Feb/2/17 refinished the stock

Oh sorry, I misunderstood and yea I didn't even think to ask at OP when I bought the gun, they might be my best bet for a crate.
I seen them selling stripper clips of ammo there last week so they may very well have crates for sale, I am sure someone does in St. John's, pretty much every CTC here does.

all cosmoline cleaned and I sanded, stained and refinished the stock. The top pic is how she looked when I bought her and the bottom two pics is what she looks like now, I wanted less red on the stock so I gave her two light coats of ebony stain and 4 coats of clear gloss and lickity split, looks like a completly different rifle.
The bore in this gun looked good when I bought it, with all the cosmoline out of it you can see that it's never been fired. Man am I happy I dropped in to OP for a look that day. I got a brand new 60 year old gun :)

Took the new refinished pics at night I may take new ones tomorrow in the daylight

Mine didn't come with slings, just cleaning gear!
Mine didn't come with a sling neither, I was lucky enough to drop into a place yesterday for some ammo and one of the boys dug through some stuff out back and found this one, he said he could remember seeing it kicking around, thankfully he found it and gave it to me. Last one they had and I got it for nothing. Yes boy!!! Come-on with that free stuff.

Yea, for that price, no sling is no big deal!

i picked up a couple really nice sks at CT the other day for 229 each. one had a sling cleaning kit and oil bottle.
the other just came with a black plastic oil bottle and mosin negant tool kit, but no sling

What's the big attraction to sks's? Is it just that you can go semi auto with a couple hundred dollar gun?

It's the meanest looking rifle you can buy but beautiful at the same time with its stubby barrel and beautiful wood stock and gimmicky folding blade but super functional all at the same time. I just love them. I have a bunch none in a plastic stock. And don't get me started on the Mosin nagant. Love all Russian rifles.

Unfortunately I can't yet, I have to wait until Sunday to do orientation at the gun club "again"!. I didn't renew my membership last year because I had cancer, having cancer kind of took my attention away from shooting for a while. So anyway if you miss a year (don't renew your membership) you have to do this orientation again before you can renew your club membership.
So hopefully Sunday will be a good day so I can get this orientation over with and get my membership again so I can go shoot this beast for the first time, honestly I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm very interested in the refinishing process. What brand of stain and did you just apply with a brush? Did you use a brush for the clear or a spray can? It looks great. I have a sks and amosin I would like to redo.

I used minwax ebony stain and minwax clear, I sanded the old coating off. For the stain I used a cloth and wiped it on let it soak for less then a minute then wiped it off, two coats, For the clear I used a good brush, four coats sanding between with 320 grit sandpaper. Be sure you give the clear enough time to dry before sanding. Oh and don't be to heavy with the clear, you don't want runs in your finish.
Hope this helps.
Forgot to tell you. The clear coat is a gloss finish.
