Yes, you can acquire them, but without special permits, which the CFO's won't issue, you can't shoot them.
Completely phucking bogus IMHO.
Yup, they won't issue special permits to take them to the range now. You can only enjoy them in your safe, this is nothing but willful harassment.
Is the NFA and/or the CSSA doing anything to try and get this deliberately instituted harassment that has no basis on any law stopped?

The situation sucks, to be sure, and last year I acquired a British L1A1 I would love to try at the range. But sadly, not until things change.
However, it is false to call it harassment that "has no basis in law". The prohibition against transporting 12(x) prohibs is very much codified in law, and the bureaucrats have zero say in the matter.
read below excert from the firearms act clearly stated purposes for prohib firearms in section 19-2
Transporting and using prohibited firearms or restricted firearms
19. (1) An individual who holds a licence authorizing the individual to possess prohibited firearms or restricted firearms may be authorized to transport a particular prohibited firearm or restricted firearm between two or more specified places for any good and sufficient reason, including, without restricting the generality of the foregoing,
(a) for use in target practice, or a target shooting competition, under specified conditions or under the auspices of a shooting club or shooting range that is approved under section 29;
(a.1) to provide instructions in the use of firearms as part of a restricted firearms safety course that is approved by the federal Minister; or
(b) if the individual
(i) changes residence,
(ii) wishes to transport the firearm to a peace officer, firearms officer or chief firearms officer for registration or disposal in accordance with this Act or Part III of the Criminal Code,
(iii) wishes to transport the firearm for repair, storage, sale, exportation or appraisal, or
(iv) wishes to transport the firearm to a gun show.
Exception for prohibited firearms other than prohibited handguns

I guess the issuance of a SAP permits post "firearms act" was not meant to be a certain approval. For instance a 12(2) could not be taken to just any range but only to military ranges but many were approved for 12(3) and 12(5) and certified as such.
So again, the CFOs were issuing SAPs post firearms act but all of a sudden at a later date decided to stop. Nothing appears to have changed in law but they just stopped issuing SAPs altogether, at least that is my understanding. Did they amend C68??

In 1994 ALL semi-automatic centrefire rifles on the market that came standard with a pistol grip were prohibited. ALL of them. The AR-15 was later granted an exemption. Any other designs you can buy now came on the market after the list was prepared.

And you know, when I got this list in the mail from Allan Rock's guys, the new (at the time) HK caseless ammunition rifle (the G-11) was also on the list; Even though it wasn't even for sale AND still in prototype form.
Their justification for including that on their "list"? To paraphrase, "because of these firearms association with crime". Funny how a rifle that's not even in production found it's way on the "frequently used in crime" list
