I just completed my Black Badge course on the weekend at Silverdale and all I can say is that it was amazing, I think it was one of the most exciting and educational things I've done in a very long time. I really have to thank Alex and the others that made it all happen, I am excited to try for my full certification in a couple of weeks and see the other who took the course that will be there also. They really put us threw the paces and made us all work for it, we did drill after drill and I think everyone walked away a far better and safer shooter. I really think we lucked out having Alex as an instructor, I didnt expect that level of training and I definatly learned allot. So for now its practice, practice, practice well see what happens next.

Cheers,
Evan

I have mine coming in a few months and can't wait... sounds like a blast.

You lucked out with Alex, learning form the open champ you definitely have a leg up on most others right out of the gate :)

See you @ OPSL round 5

lucky for us he's a good teacher also whos willing to share what he knows. However I still have to remember it all lol, practice as much as I can i guess and remember finger on frame and muzzle down range :). The other instructors were also very good and dedicated, im sure it took some patiance to deal with all of us getting over learning our curves.

Cheers,
Evan

Congrats!! and welcome to the world of IPSC. I just finished my first qualifier last weekend. Although score is totally not good at all but I had a blast shooting and met so many cool people!

What did you focus on the most in your qualifier? I just really want to do it safely and get that signature for now and not worry about speed and score so much, that will all come in time.

Cheers,
Evan

The main thing the instructor focused on was safety! It was good that the people attended my class used quite a bit array of different guns. The instructor showed us the proper and safer way to decock a DA/SA gun such as the every so popular CZ Shadow. At the end of the class, safety is re-emphasized and then told us to concentrate on accuracy first. One we can shoot accurately consistently, then try to speed up the time slowly. At the end, he told us for our first qualifier, just go have fun and take it easy. Make sure we finish the qualifier without getting DQed.

He also told us some tips on avoiding getting DQed for no reason such as if we are using a H&K or Walther gun, if your thumb aint long enough, use the weak-hand finger to press the mag release and keep the trigger finger away from the trigger guard.

What about in your first qualifing match, how was it and how did you prep for it?

Using your trigger finger for the mag release on a H&K should not get you DQ'd. If it does, then the RO clearly did not see what he/she thought he/she saw.

Well.. the main thing I focused on at my qualifier is safety and avoid getting DQed. Stuff like finger off trigger when not shooting, watch out for breaking 90. Also listen to command carefully. There are few people got DQed cause they made ready before being told so.

As far as prep goes, I really didn't do anything special besides dry fire practice at home and practice shooting accurately at the range. I am new to shooting so I think thats the main thing I will focus on for now. I believe once I can shoot accurate consistant, speed will follow.

It shouldn't get you DQed, but it could happen sometimes due to the viewing angle. So for guns with mag release thats part of the trigger guard, the instructor recommended using weak hand to press it, or use your thumb if its long enough.

Just took the BB course at silverdale with Alex last weekend and what a blast. Alex is great. I highly recommend taking the black badge course weather you plan on competing or not.

I have signed up for my qualifying match next weekend. Gotta get my feet wet hehe.
On a positive note i joined a local club on their ipsc practice match yesterday and again i had a blast. I feel much better about the qualifier match.

Alex is great to work with. There is a reason some of us hang out like groupies with him. Glad you had a good time. We'll see you next weekend.
