Well I finally got my PU scope yesterday and spent the day installing it on the new mosin I got from SIR, along with a new bolt handle. Didn't cost too much, and looks great:)

You have to drill and tap 4 holes. Two small, two large. And cut the stock to fit the mount. Suprizing though, that the steel of the mosin is very easy to drill through and tap, but go slow, cause if you brake off a tap in a hole you'll be SOL.

Yes, they are post war. Not bad for the $220 or so I payed for the set up. Least the rifle is war time (1943).

Actually, the seller supplied a few taps so I have extras now. Everything also came in a free camo fanny pack so it was a good deal. Can't wait to try it out.

The original Mosin Nagant PU scopes did not have an adjustable field of view so sighting it in had to be done by grinding the mount (or alternately shimming) repeatedly until zero was acheived.

There are now good three post PU repRo scopes that have an adjustable FOV so in my opinion, this type of setup has become much more home-doable.

I have broken off a tap in the hole and although it took me hours to grind it into pieces without damaging the threads, I was successful in restoring an ex-sniper.

Keep in mind Ex-Snipers are HARDER to restore because the old holes are welded shut and welds cannot be re-drilled, only ground away. You are better off, if you aren't trying to put an authentic one together, to buy a non-ex-sniper to make your repro.

I always love seeing repro Mosin sniper projects, I'd like to do one myself eventually. I'm assuming the cheek weld isn't very good anymore, do you plan on making a piece to re-affirm the cheek weld? Id like to see some groups :D

I think that for all the parts, accumounts.com is a good place to buy.

AFAIK it's illiegal to bring a scope up from the states without the proper paper work, although this doesn't apply to scopes from Europe. If you try ordering from accumounts, you may lose your purchase. Perhaps others have experience and can set the record straight.

Ljungman, did you get your bolt done by "the boltman"? I got my handle bent through him and thought he did excellent work.
