Just got back from shooting for first time(SKS)

The 1990 Czech stuff I have seems to be more corrosive than the 79 Czech I had before... Also the norinco silver box stuff was really nice shooting, non corrosive, but would leave a horrible soot behind .Just an observation

do yoursellf a favour..

go to gunsprings.com and order the wolff sks spring pack. Makes a much better trigger pull, and more accurate rifle. Trigger pull on these is atrocious.. but they as fun as hell.

Sights do stink (that shallow notch rear sight esp..)

Do they ship to Canada?

edit - just noticed Hi Caliber carries them for $20. I think Im going to pick up this and their target front post too (another $20)...

personally i wouldn't bother with non corrosive ammo. it's a waste of money imo. plus some are sold as non corrosive, but it really is. i don't have faith in the claims anymore and would clean mine after every shoot anyways.

not sure i'd bother with any "upgrades" on it. if anything maybe i'd upgrade the sights, and put a limbsaver on it to extend the LOP.Ootherwise I can't think of anything i'd do it to to change it.

glad to hear you had a good time with it. it's a great reliable gun. take care of it and it will likely outlive you :p

A while ago there was a shipment of ammo being sold as non-corrosive that was in fact corrosive.

This is no longer the case though. Canada Ammo stands behind their claims of any non-corrosive ammo 100%. They have even sent some stuff to be lab-tested. According to them if it says non-corrosive on the box then in their experience it has indeed been non-corrosive. So if you are concerned about getting corrosive ammo just buy from them.

If you would rather clean your rifle every time thats fine but not everyone has time to do a detailed strip-and-clean after every range trip. And if you dont then there is a lot of value in the non-corrosive ammo. I used to shoot milsurp cheap stuff but have decided its not worth the savings over non-corrosive. At only $5-6/box for non-corrosive ammo its still WAYYYY cheaper than shooting my 303 or 270.

These days I keep some milsurp around for those days I know I'll be cleaning my stuff right when I get home. Otherwise its LCW or Norinco non-corrosive. My LGS sells em for $5-6 a box depending on brand and whether its HP or FMJ.

As for upgrades the only thing I have done with my sks so far is add a slip-on recoil pad from Walmart. $11 and adds an extra inch to LOP. Also fits my Enfield so thats an extra bonus in utility. I want to change the front sight post out for something smaller (Or maybe just make the one I have skinnier) and getting a wolf spring kit. Eventually I wanna do a full trigger job but Im not sure if I trust myself to work on a sear quite yet. I have also thought about getting a scout mount and a red dot or some tech sights but haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.

I just installed the sling.

Then watched this YouTube video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HtaLUbTwZM

I've been trying it out at home here and feel that it does indeed make holding your aim steady a lot easier. I can't wait to get back out shooting and try it out. I feel it will help my offhand shots for sure.

The sling does help with steady aim. I ditched the original sling though cause I hated the clanging sound and how it mars up the barrel, sling loop, bayo and gas tube. I use a nylon sling instead.

My trigger group is not oiled much. just a wipe when im cleaning to avoid any corrosion mostly, but it stays pretty much clean.

I only shoot non corrosive in mine but it shouldn't change much for actual cleanliness, just how much damage that cleanliness does lol. For 19 cents a shot for the non corrosive I got who really cares if it was more expensive.

What is bump fire?

Something you don't want to happen, most likely the firing pin is stuck. Glad you had fun with it, I love mine, I have looked into sight options and the best thing I found was a fiber optic front sight at al flahertys. They make dust covers with rails on them but theirs a lot of bad reviews on them.

Tools that cut down my cleaning times are,

Big brush from doller store to scrub bolt, reciver, ect,
.22 cal brush for gas tube scrubbing,
Breakcleaner for rinsing off the water (especially in the bolt I consider this mandatory) before solvent cleaning and spray on oil ( don't let it touch the wood!!!).
also brushing the bore with dish soap helps avoid using 100 patches, i do with while rinsing in a big sink.

I recently sold my SKS and it looked like new after 3,000-4,000 rounds.

Now you better clean it. With all the rain and humidity, it'll rust like crazy. Get that corrosive sh!t out of there. Welcome to the world of surplus rifles and cheap ammo... best bang for the buck in a centerfire rifle and the availability to use cheap ammunition.

Why everyone so freaked out about brake kleen touching the wood ?
Up untill last fall I had never taken my stock off.
Brake kleen all the time ran out of the thing.
Never hurt it that i can tell

Took it out again yesterday. Put another few hundred rounds down range and the wife did as well. Didn't get as dirty this time, wasn't raining so I think the rain had an effect on how fast it carbons up.

Also tried shooting from a improvised rest, notched a large log and used it. Found out the gun is way way more accurate than I was giving it credit for. I set up 5 tennis balls on golf tees hammered into the top of tree stumps, at various ranges 25 yards to 60 yards, then proceeded to pick them off 5 for 5 rounds fired from the rest, and I was firing as fast as I could acquire the targets. Maybe 5-6 seconds total time. I was stunned, wife said I looked at her after with my jaw dropped lol.

At least now I know when I miss offhand it's me not the rifle. The sling helps a lot offhand though. I can now put 5/5 rounds on a 6 inch target at 50 yards. Can keep it under 3 inch at 25 yards. I don't think that's horrible for my second trip, and shows good improvement over the first time.

Also only took me 30 min to strip and clean, I was going all out balls to the wall like it was a time trial to see how fast I could clean it. Just checked my work now and it's clean I didn't miss anything, and it's well oiled and smooth functioning just ran a few dozen dummy rounds through the action.

I had one failure to fire, good hit to the primer but no boom, how often is this supposed to happen with surplus ammo?

I opened the bolt a millimetre or two, confirmed it was a failure to fire, closed the bolt, waited 3 min, then walked over to a creek and pulled the bolt and ejected it into the creek, was that a safe way to handle a failure to fire? I picked it up to inspect from the creek before I left that's how I know it had a good primer strike.

I've shot Romanian, Russian, Czech, and Chinese surplus, and have never had a light primer strike, or failure to fire...make sure the firing pin has proper protrusion, I guess, or maybe it was one in a few thousand...was the primer deeper than others, was the cartridge deformed in any way? weird...Also the sks is more accurate than a lot of people give it credit for...Supported, I can put 5 rounds in 8-10 inches at 100 yards with factory irons, with my 54 izzy. my 50 tula is so pretty i don't shoot it much, but i have taken it out to get the sights pretty close.
