Hi there,

Figured I would post a greeting now that I have received my nonrestricted/restricted PAL. Not sure what to get but looking for advice. Was thinking something like glock 17 gen 4 (9mm) or a smith and wesson m&p9. Anyhow hello!

Buy everything! Well an SKS, SVT, or a mosin is a good place to start! Ammo is dirt cheap too! For a restricted you should start off with a .22 but trade ex has cheap 9mm (They are called P1s, they are ex-german army)

Welcome . Start out with something simple like a gun, or some ammo . I use my Rpal for just about everything but unless you are actually buying a gun most seem not to care much .

On a more topic based answer , go out and handle some pistols or rifles. Buying something for it's name or reputation is not good if it does not fit you and your shooting style .

Hello and welcome to the forums, Glock is a nice choice t get used to maintaining your gun without fear and there are a ton of upgrades you can do yourself without being a gunsmith..

Welcome to CGN!

MY first was a .45 (norc). Wish I had bought .22 first, like the ruger 22/45 instead. What I spent on ammo last year, could have bought me both guns anyways, with just less ammo for the .45.

If I had a do-over, it would be a .22 and a 9mm. Ammo cost factors in more than you'd think. All depends on your budget I guess.

When asking for advice you are going to get what another individual thinks is best, that in no way will be where you end up in a year or two. No one can tell you what to buy. I have sold every gun that I "started with". Now what I have suits me and my type of shooting.
Until you buy and use something you will never know....... just get permission for the EE as soon as possible lol

Yeah I planned to rely heavily on my friends who have large gun collections to try stuff out before purchasing. The reason I was thinking 9mm handgun was because its fun to shoot at the range and its like $9 per box for ammunition.

300-500 will get you some decent .22 or 9mm on ee. Blast for a while and then sell for most of your $$ back when you path takes you a diff way. My fav guns are my ar15, m+p 22, and colt .45. New outlaw on the way will likely fit the top list too. Other pile of guns are just safe queens.

Good luck and have fun.

For a first gun, I would strongly recommend something in .22LR. The ammo is cheap and won't break your budget. If you have any friends that are regular shooters, ask them if you can tag along with them to try out their .22 handguns or rifles. This will certainly help you in the process of selecting your first firearm purchase. Personally, I lean towards semi-automatic firearms, especially if your first purchase is a pistol. Go to your local dealer as well, to check out what they have in stock. This will also help you in your decision process, as you'll get a feel of the firearm in your hand as to whether or not it's comfortable to hold. Good luck in your search and welcome aboard.

You'll be lucky to get boxes of 9mm for around $12 currently. Most stuff is $15+

Any of the following make good starting guns:

Mossberg 500, or Rem 870, SKS, 22LR handgun and rifle, 9mm handgun.

SKS is a good start. They are exciting to own and cheap to run. When the novelty runs off, and your interests take you in a direction you are comfortable with, you will decide if accurate or long range or burning ammo is what is the most fun for you.
a good 22 is mandatory for the same reasons as an SKS, except most 22's are accurate.
Let the hobby direct your interest and it will take where you want to be. Have fun and learn the boring intricacies that make your friends eyes roll and you will know that you are there.
Then you will discover handguns and it will start all over again. Same with shotguns.

Welcome to CGN and to shooting with your own stuff! This really is an awesome community, there is LOTS of experience in the lives of the people here and they're willing to share it. They'll sometimes tease you but it's all in good fun.
I will put in another vote for a .22LR rifle (the wife picked up a Savage with scope for $260 new, shoots great) then watch the EE and local shop for used stuff. And yes, you can almost never go wrong with an SKS with a crate of surplus :D (as long as your range allows milsurp)
