Just picked up a CZ 858. (I got a few newb questions)

make sure the piston and gas port are super dry.

I second the windex. that or the G96. then finish at home with hoppes.

Some things like the grip are tragic and are ideally replaced. Everything else is good to go. I prefer a fore grip for control but you dont NEED it.

I believe the broken shell thing has a lot more to do with it then just laqure build up. I had that problem happen to me and I just shoved a ball of JB weld into the end of the case, let it dry, then tapped it out with a cleaning rod and hammer. Two light taps and the shell slid out. If it was this laqure stuck shell problem people speak of, Id probably would of had to hammer the @#$% out of it to get it out right? It just seems like its stuck in there really hard because trying to pry the shell out is impossible because you can't get a good grip on the shell to get it out. A gun smith from Nanaimo told me his theory on what is happening. I use the word "theory" as to not piss off the people that believe its a laqure build up problem because I could be wrong. No one has spent the time to study it to figure out what exactly is going wrong but from what i've experianced with the problem myself, I don't believe it for a second its from laqure build up. Anyways, the gun smith told me its probably because the metal for the shell is already weak and the dentonation from the primer is enough force to break off the end of the case. He told me it doesn't just happen in the SKS or Vz 58. He deals with at least one broken shell case per day and they happen a lot in rimmed guns like 30/30, 45/70, or even .303 but it also happens in regular hunting rifles chambered for just about anything thats not a rimmed case. Again, before I get flack from people, I could be wrong so take what I say with a grain of pepper. Thats right, I said pepper not salt. Damnit NoBark you've always got to be different.

No kidding !
That pistol grip is a slippery piece of crap . I've had mine a half year and only added a muzzle brake ( yes , I have delicate shoulders ) , and a FAB pistol grip . That is the bomb ! This summer , on a particularly hot day , I almost hit myself in the head with the stock when my hand slipped right off that original grip . On the whole gun , that is the only thing that is a totally unforgivable POS .
The CZ is the most fun thing to shoot for me .

I've had my CZ for 2 years, have added a larger pistol grip and a flash hider (I just didn't like the plastic thread protector on the muzzle, and HATE the uncovered threads), and have had precisely ONE problem with the 858.

No, it wasn't the notorious "gremlin", it was the pin that holds the muzzle device on! There was so much gunk in with the pin and spring that the spring absolutely would not work, so the pin wouldn't hold any muzzle device on. I had to drive out the retaining pin, after which I was able to remove the spring loaded pin (watch out for that spring to come flying out!!) and spring. A few blasts with some brake/contact cleaner removed the gunk and now the spring loaded pin works like a charm.

The OP is going to love his new toy!

I encourage you to read the FAQ's. Lots of good stuff. One thing about vz58 Style guns is that they tend to reproduce in your gunsafe.

Sh:t! That happened to me! Now I have 2 CSAs, NR and R. I was honestly thinking of getting another and slapped myself. The858s have mind control!!!

I've been through about 5 different styles of ammo and its only ever the lacquered czech that does it. Has never happened with russian or chinese.

I had it out yesterday, and all of you were right. I have a new favorite in my collection! It was crazy fun! I put 150 rounds through it, there was no sighn of the gremlin, and not a single malfunction. My only complaint is the pistol grip, too slipery, but I already knew I was going to be replacing it. Other than that it was simply awsome!. I'm gald some of the CGNers here talked me out of the SU-16 and into the 858.
I did :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: out on using the corrosive ammunition, only because I wont have the time to give it a good cleaning in the next few days.
Anyway, here is a group I shot from 125 yards with the factory sights, and MFS steel case ammo. It grouped high, but I think its because I had the sight set on U and not 100 yards. Noob mistake, it wasent my first, and its far from my last.

I'm actually fairly impressed with its accuracy, I tried this with both of my SKS's and it wasent nearly as tight as this. I'm sure if I had a optic on it that group would tighten up a fair bit.
Thanks for the replies everyone, I know what to keep a eye on in the future. Hopefully with any luck I wont run into any of them
