Just Picked Up My First Ever 25-06

High velocity small bores have been impressing the uninformed for generations, but how did it happen to you?

Seriously though, the .25/06 is a great round, I might have leaned more towards my facetious comment above, except for a pal who has made a believer out of me with his.

I tried the 125 matrix in my Stevens 25/06. I only had 25 to work with so the results aren't finished but I couldn't do better then 1.5" or so at 50 yards. I'm sure with more bullets and other powders I could get them a lot better groupings. I've heard good things. They do hold together very well in water though. Now that you bring it up I should buy a bunch and play when I get some free time.
I use 117 gr interlocks at 3100/3150 fps and they preform awesome for a cheap bullet. 2" exit holes on wolves and coyotes though. They don't have the cool rebated boat tail but they group into a jagged hole when I do my part

But in case you don't know shooting a skunk with a 25/06 at 30 yards is not a good idea. The bullet ripped it apart so violently it was like it sprayed and the wife wasn't happy

But anyway congrats on acquiring an awesome cal

I can assure you that a 16 gauge at four yards is an equally bad idea.......

You could always have the bbl set back and rechamber to 257Roberts. Then it wouldn't be so much like a 270.

Otherwise you might as well have a 270. :dancingbanana:

Buddy has good results with the 125 matrix, win primers and retumbo...

We tried several powders and primers, and that was the winning combo, His is a Vanguard with a McGowan barrel.

Cool, curious to hear what you end up with for velocities after you play with powder types and quantities, though I gotta say, someone should give ya a hard time about all those nice rifles that are too pretty to leave the safe lest they fall into harm while leaning against the wall by the back door. :p

Yep Blargon I was thinking that may well be a winning combo and I happen to have 5 or so lbs of Retumbo, Win and CCI primers, gobs of 270 and -06 brass..........now for some bullets from Marshal, but of course it'll all have to wait until I'm back home in B.C. where all my gear is...........

Oh hey I've also got several cars that don't leave the garage unless the sun is shining and it's 20+ degrees...........I like pretty things that go fast........kinda like my ex-wives, well at least the gone fast part........I believe that when one has pretty and expensive toys, one should take good care of them to retain the highest value possible and possibly even inflate in value.
I also have tools that I use and I bought this 25-06 specifically as a tool, like my 300 Wby and my 375 H&H..........still to be taken care of but to use for the task intended.

Besides I've never had a 25-06 before......what can I say? I sure hope it ain't too pretty.......

Gentlemen, you obviously have not learned the trick to skunk shooting...............one must always head shoot a skunk, elstwise one will be in the midst of an odorous affair

Well I hit it in the head. Also throughout the entire body and part of the tail. Guess there's something to be said about angles....the greenish yellow mushroom cloud was kinda interesting....and then terrible...

I have a similar story involving a cooey 840 by the back door and a written off pair of danners....

Well the other nice thing about the 25-06 is that hopefully I can execute them at a distance far enough from the house as to be significantly less odorous in close proximity to the house. And hopefully save my Scarpas from a fate as bad as SBs Danners.............
