Thanks ! - you and me both..... that little incident actually prompted me to address the work holding situation, made some hardwood jaws for an articulated machinist's vice. seems to be working out well. That & I can bring the work up closer to me rather than having to stoop over it. :) I think a checkering type cradle is gonna be called for. unlike every other gun I have done this one defied any sort of clamping/vise holding. there was zero % chance I was gonna try and clamp it by the barrels. I had to get creative with bench hooks & stop blocks.

I get sick everytime I work - the salvageable piece left is still sitting on my bench... painful reminder :(

Will have to make something out of it, big enough for pistol grips I guess....

I think that was a material selection error on my part, that toasted stuff is actually quite brittle. It may not have withstood 12ga recoil anyway :(
 
I destroy any of my failed parts, and take them to the dump. I can’t stand seeing them in my shop.
Seeing that broken stock daily would drive me nuts.

That walnut version is truly gorgeous.

I keep most of the butt stocks to use as checkering & carving practise .... then I give them to a couple buddies/neighbors to burn ... :)

The guy across the street has commented on how well & clean the scraps I give him burn .. didn't have the heart to tell him he just had a $300 backyard fire :)

I do try to re-purpose as much as I can though. always need tool handles & back scratchers :)

it's a shame to throw away good wood.
 
The Borchardt will be into finishing this weekend, just have to do a 320g sanding & whisker it :
