I hunt in marsh and heavy brush. No paths either than animal trails. So today is the first time ever this happened to me. I'm walking in the brush when I feel something grab my foot. kicked it free cause I thought I had an alder stuck through the laces. Nope big old racoon. Trying to get my foot... It threw me for a loop I backed up further but the bugger was aggressive. Made some noise but the little #### hissed at me and started to come at me again. I'm thinking what the hell. So he met a loaded 12guage.
Anyone ever have this happen to them?
Just a strange day!!

I've had a similar occurrence but it did not grab me, just hissed and growled in high goldenrod. I only saw the goldenrod quake where he took off, never did actually see it. It was likely sleeping in the tall weeds and I just happened to stroll right by, wading through the chest-high weeds. I didn't have anything with me to fend him off with, so I'm glad he took off.

I had a Fisher take me on in a "growling" vs "yelling" match ... he won! I backed down and he went sauntering down the trail to a creek. Arrogant little prick!

GF(now wife) was breaking up an unwanted beaver dam on her property, when a beaver went for her.
She had to kill it with a big stick. True story.

Ha! Wifes uncle saw one on paved road one time, figured it was dead so he stopped to pick it up. Bugger attacked and left a nasty gash on his leg, required stitches and bled like a stuck pig.

I've been harassed by a squirrel while grouse hunting...does that count? lol Little bast**d took exception to my presence I guess, went up a tree beside me and started screeching. I get that part 100%, but, I keep walking and it comes down the tree...rips through the woods parallel to the trail then up a tree 15' ahead of me and starts screeching again. No lie, this process repeated itself for almost 30 minutes. Think about that much noise for that long in (otherwise) quiet woods.....that's allot of harassment! No grouse were shot that day (not just the squirrel's fault) but I left thinking I would have gotten allot of satisfaction from feeding that thing a load of #7-1/2 from the old 20ga. Wingmaster. I don't know if I'll tolerate that behavior for so long next time. :)

I've been stalked and charged at by 2 wolves on separate occasions. Once while beaver trapping I was bent over making a set, heard splashing behind me and thought it was a beaver coming for me, stood up with my conibear tongs ready for battle and over the lodge comes a big black timber wolf. He stopped 3 feet away at the top of the lodge, figured out I wasn't a beaver and bolted, he withdrew 40 feet then stared at me. I decided it was a good time to leave at that point as I had no gun.

The 2nd one I was doing a drive for a deer hunt in heavy brush. I see something coming at me through a spruce plantation and get ready thinking its a deer, a big grey timber wolf is running right at me and stops 10 feet away and stares at me, I believe he was deciding if I was good to eat. I settled the standoff with a 7mm accubond.

I was in moose camp with family and friends way out in the bush. Due to a brand new pair of hunting boots that I had not taken the time to properly break in I had crippled myself (both achilles tendons) and so was unable to hunt after the second day. Lesson learned.

I was content to be the Campee and Cook but I would usually take a casual walk during the day with my rifle down an old logging trail that we had originally drove in on our ATV's. Easy walking and dry enough for my running shoes and the moose are usually exactly where you find them...lol...as my Pa used to say.

At one point the trail did a big ole switch back going down a ravine to cross the creek then switch back again coming up the other side. Looking straight across the ravine I could see a coyote trotting down the trail coming my direction investigating smells as he went. It crossed my mind that it would follow the trail all the way down and then up the switch backs and would come up the trail right in front of me.

I didn't want to shoot and maybe disrupt my family and friends moose hunting but I thought it might be amusing to have some fun with Mr Yote' at his expense so I stepped behind a big old poplar tree and waited.

It took a while but eventually Mr Yote' eventually came trotting right up the trail just as I had figured. I stood up tight to the tree and without moving at all I said out loud.

"BANG BANG ! YOU'RE DEAD!

The look on it's face was priceless and it swapped ends and took off in hyper drive. I laughed out loud and shouted after it "Gotcha ya dirty bugger!"

It then proceeded to parallel me in the bush just far enough back that I could not see it but it howled, and yipped, and yapped and made every noise known to the coyote world. I walked for another hour and it stayed with me the entire way, making all kinds of noise. When I turned around and headed back to camp I figured it would break off and consider itself happy with revenge but it stayed with me. Always far enough back to remain unseen so I couldn't shoot it.

When I eventually got back to camp I was hoping the crew would be there so we could try to think of a way to trick the coyote and one of us could get a shot at it but it was much too early for anyone to return. That damn coyote stayed back in the bush and continued to make noise until the first of the crew made it back.

Of course the first words out of their mouths was "Wow, did you hear that coyote howling? Real close I would say!!" f:P:2:

Eating supper they all said you should have shot it. Yeah...right...
Regards,
Dave
