Just to make the Gun Purists cry...

Can you show us a pic of the can, or whatever the stuff came in? Or could you give us a bit of a "how to" ?

It's a roll like wrapping paper. If you search on YouTube there is tonnes of videos of people wrapping their cars, particularly mirrors and whatnot with carbon-fiber printed designs. To prep the gun I simply wiped the whole thing down with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils. I rough cut the vinyl to the right size then using a hair dryer you simply stretch and pull it to fit around the gun. Once it's all on the gun, heat the whole thing and it helps the glue "set" so it doesn't peel too easily. The vinyl is available at auto places, but it's super cheap on ebay. I bought my roll (which wasn't the cheapest, solid colours and camo are about 30% cheaper) which is 60" x 16" for like $13 shipped. I just chose the roll size that would allow me to do the barrel in one length without seams.

Let us know how the sharp edges hold up over time, I can see them wearing through eventually.

I trimmed the areas around the hinge point to avoid rubbing. The vinyl is about the same thickness as 3 pieces of paper, so areas with tight tolerances it can't be applied

How do you do the joints?
Overlap and the heat gun melts it together?

Chit, I thought it was a spray on system that hardens up like Sarahan wraps.

Heat gun doesn't melt the wrap together. I just started the wrap at the bottom and wrapped it around so the only seem is on the bottom of the receiver and bottom of the barrel. If you look closely at the bottom of the gun you can see the seam, but the colour pattern I chose hides it well. As I was wrapping I just cut out the slot for the hammer and the break-lever. That's the reason I tried it on this gun, one barrel, one piece receiver, meant only 2 pieces of vinyl to place

That looks really cool.

What do you plan to do for the stock? How about a bright, metallic emerald green paint?

I had sanded down and re-oiled the stock pieces before wrapping, so for now it's "done"

Although making the gun more crazy looking does sound interesting :p

I guess I over thought the hating. I forgot I was finishing an old shotgun. I have read MANY a threads of people hating on those who modified a (then) $75 SKS

I'm glad people like it. I really like the way it turned out. I had it on the porch in the sunshine this afternoon and to walk around it and see it go from green to purple is really neat. Hopefully she stands up to some trap shooting this summer

Do the same thing to something like a Pre64 M70 and you can expect a little more ####. But for an old Cooey most won't bat an eye. Bottom line is that you got it fixed up and working again. That's all that matters.

instead of a paint, i would suggest a colour tint stain...it would bring out the grains of the wood as well as colour, something like white washing
