K31 Scope Mount Blocks Ejection

I finally got to shoot my K31 on the weekend. I have had it for 2 years, but never got around to shooting it, so I used it at the ORA Sporting Rifle Shoot. I shot it at 200 yards, and it was quite accurate.

But I discovered a problem. The empties try to eject straight up and hit a small ledge on the ring base and then bounce back into the open action.

The no-drill scope base mounts on the right action rail. It has a dovetail for the scope rings to attach to. The rings are a one piece set that are part of a steel rail with a dovetail to fit the base.

The ring base sticks out above the action by about 1/10” of an inch. Just enough to bounce the empties back into the action.

I took the scope off and used a file to bevel 1/8” off the part of the scope base causing the problem. I just used a file.

Today I test fired the rifle and the empties eject perfectly.

That is why the the rails are offset, to minimize the possibility of interference with the top ejection in all Swiss straight pull rifles. They had to figure out how close they could get to centerline without causing interference with most 3/8" dovetail based (9-11mm) scope rings.

They tried using typical 7/8" ring bases and could not get good reliability without moving the rail to an unacceptable increase in offset.

I had similar ejection issues with one ring/scope combo but I have a set-up on there now that doesn't seem affected with this problem. Also, pulling on the bolt like you mean it helps kick the shells out better when scoped.
