Hi I just recently got my pal and I'm wanting to know which one out of k31,mosin 91/30, or svt 40 would be best to get first

IMO the k31 is the better rifle, but ammo is expensive. You would probably get more fun and time on target with a mosin and 800 rounds of 7.62x54r.

Mosin is the cheapest to feed.

Otherwise get whatever makes you smile. They all have their good points.

Check the bores on Russian rifles, though. Many out there are in only fair condition, or caked in dirt

No comparison - your comparing apples to oranges. Only thing in common in my mind is that they are all Milsups.

The SVT is semi-auto and will probably be the best investment - especially with current politics. For example in 1989 you could order a SVT with bayo for $249.00 and now the bayonets sell for that much and the rifles $250-400 for a standard one.

The Mosin Nagant is a durable bolt action - generally rough finishing and most have been re-finished in the arsenal. In 1989 they cost $69 and mow they sell for $120-220 for a standard one.

The K31 is a very slick straight pull bolt action - excellent finishing - second to none for a Milsup rifle as there were no expediencies. In 1980 they cost $250.00 and not they sell for $300-400.

So for accuracy/quality the K31 wins but losses on availability and cost of ammo. Some rare variations out there in low production numbers but you need the right buyer.

The SVT is great for investment/history and ammo is cheap.

The Mosin Nagant can be very accurate and very durable, dirt cheap with cheap ammo.

So it depends what you want them for.

Good analysis bnzmauser !!

In the end it all depends on what you want.

My first rifle was a Mosin Nagant. It has since become my deer rifle.

I then upped the ante with an SVT-40 since it uses the same ammo.

For really cheap plinking nothing beats a 22LR but plinking with a 7.62x54r bullet has some real authority !!

If it comes down to the svt vs. a 91/30 I'd buy an svt first, which is what I did actually. Less svt40 around, prices will most likely go up quicker, so snap a good condition one up while you can find them. Then get a mosin, like said they both share the same ammo so you should just get both. If you have the extra cash buy both from the start, throw an sks in there while your at it lol.

I'm looking to use it for plinking between 100 to 300 yards

I'm tempted to say Mosin for plinking, given how cheap the ammo is but...

Supplies of the K31 are going to run out first. And they are such a nice rifle.

I have all 3 you mentioned, and the order I got them in was:

SVT, Mosin, K31...

Got each for $200 or less. The only one you can still get at that price is the Mosin.

A K31 will do for target practice, hunting, plinking, whatever. It's a fine, well made, accurate firearm. You won't have to worry about corrosive ammo or cleaning the cosmoline off it to get it out shooting.

Then again, you can get a Mosin and a 880 round crate of ammo for about the same price as K31's OR SVT's seem to be going for nowadays. And there's something to be said for that.

They are all good rifles. You won't go wrong with any of them. I have all three.

If your new to the hobby, SVT or MN 91/30 in that order. Ammo is cheap for them now. They are accurate and you can get a lot of trigger time with them with the current price of ammo. Robust, accurate, they won't disappoint you. The SVT is one of my favourite semi-auto milsurps.

The K31 is EXCELLENT and you should eventually get one of the those too. It is superb. Ammo is pricier so less shooting time, so that is a factor to consider if your just starting your shooting career. The K31 and GP11 ammo are very accurate - but at slightly more expense.

If you can get all 3 three to get a feel for each rifle. They each have their own characteristics that may or may not appeal to you. Shoot them all and then decide. Sell what you dont like in EE. Like most in this thread, I have also owned all 3 but ended up keeping the K31 only.

The k31 is a much better rifle than the MN or svt (and I own both). Ammo however is more than twice the price for the K31 and it may run out sooner. Have you considered an sks? By far my favorite milsurp. I just love the way they function! ammo is still dirt cheap and they don't beat you up like a MN or K31

If this is your first gun,.... get the mosin..... then when you decide you want a semi, buy an SKS, learn to handle it safely and clean it properly, once youve achieved that you will be ready for the great burden of the SVT 40. IF not properly maintained, you will destroy your SVT 40 quite quickly (its not a good gun to own as a first).

Personally I am going to lean towards the K31 as they are fantastic pieces of work, but if your concern is range time and the budget is a bit tight then Mosin Nagant all the way (personally at the moment my K31 comes out every second or third trip, well my Mosins tend to have at least one sneak in to the firing line).
A heads up with the SVT-40 is that it can be very picky ammo wise, it took 3 different types of milsurp ammo to find one my rifle liked (tons of ammo for my Mosins though). Unfortunately I ran out of the type it liked, so now I am searching again as otherwise I will have to buy modern ammo, and the way it treats brass, that isn't too affordable.

My recommendation would be get a Mosin Nagant, with a crate of ammo, and a .22 plinker of some sort. I know a .22 isn't what most want to hear (it took me about 15 full power rifles before I bought one) but ammo wise it can save you a ton.

At the end of the day get what you want, I bought a SKS first, followed by a Mosin Nagant 91/30 followed by a SVT-40 (before all the recent imports came in so the prices were higher), don't buy one because you expect to make a profit, buy one because you want one.

Eaglelord has made a good recommendation on that. Make sure you also get a 22lr - they are practical, just as accurate, lower cost ammo, minimal recoil, you can shoot all day and hone your accuracy skills.

svt--40 all the way if you are shooting the svt-40 next to the k31 and mosin the 2 guys shooting the k31 and mosin will feel like they are wearing dreses. the svt-40 is big, mean and loud and semi auto

The SVT-40 is a bit of a complex design for a first gun. They are a blast to shoot though. Take the time to learn the rifle and you shouldn't have a problem with it being your first gun.

Not that complex, if you can field strip it you can put it back together. I never found it much more rig-a-morole to strip than an sks, just a couple extra steps.
