K31

Picked up ammo for this awhile ago without ever having the rifle, And then I watched supply dwindle and didn't want to pay $500 at the CSC, Went to canadian tire tonight to pick up another gun cabinet and they had 2 K31's in stock, both all matching, one had a sling but metal and wood was very rough and the other didn't have bad wood and metal was pretty good, no sling bit had a muzzle cap, needless to say it ended up coming home with me, and here it is, I need to take it apart and do a good cleaning on it, Only had it a few hours now. Where do I find the date? Looks like it had some stickers on it at one time, I'll clean them up, one may had dyed the wood a little.

Just in case - please check your operating rod - the flat bit of the bolt mechanism that has the knobs on it - is NOT phosphated. These op rods had a habit of cracking in the sharp angle where the lug engages in the inner bolt cam track. This is a known problem that ONLY occurred in 1944 due to a shortage of chrome. 99.99% have been changed over the years after the usual armoury visits, but.................................Since you don't show us the left-hand side of the action we have no way of knowing if your K31 went for a refurb at any time after that - the last two digits of the year stamped somewhere on the action, even on the tank.

The op rod is blued so I guess iam in the clear, But according the K31 info that the top of the milsurp secion it tells me mine is from 1943 as the serial # starts with 738

All good, what is the rod on the front of the gun for, I still havnt got to look at it much since Iam working today, I thought it was always a cleaning rod from photos but had a quick glance at it last night and it doesn't look like it comes out

Right when I got home, unfortunatly there was nothing

Yours has post war shooting competition stickers on it like mine. Indicating use in private citizen hands. Your rifle may also have a "P" stamp on the tang or barrel. Likewise, mine also did not have a card under the butt plate.

Stacking rods.Three rifle to a stack, like a tepee.

I never liked that way of storing rifles in camps. I saw plenty of cowboy movies and everytime the calvary went for a rifle like that an indian would shoot them. Why not keep your rifle with you?

I bought a k31 today, everything looks pretty good, bore looks real nice. The only thing I was thinking of doing is re blueing the receiver, has anyone done this?

I used Outers Cold Blue with Steel wool to fix the rust spots under the handguard. It finished up nicely. It does take a bit of elbow grease to get a nice even finish. I don't know if I would try to do a whole receiver with it but it is good if you want to spot finish some areas.
