K98 information wanted please

I'd be tempted to try some bronze wool on the metal very carefully and see what it looks like but do not touch the stock with anything. Any sort of heavy cleaning will definitely be detrimental to the value. A dry rag if you want to knock off the dust but any chemicals that remove grime and brighten the wood is not good.

Less is more when it comes to cleaning a rifle like this.

I haven't had time to dig into the marking either but will get around to it and post up what I find. I wish I was more knowledgeable in this area but its outside my collecting range even tho I find these depot builds and reworks fascinating.

I do not suggest you do this, but if you rub a little (veery small amount) footpowder on the marks, they will be easier to read. Don't overdo it and make sure you remove after with a toothbrush or something like that.

Try also to get a magnifying glass or watchmakers loupe (spelling) to get a closer look.

Try taking pictures from different angles and use indirect light instead of flash.

I think you have something special here ...

A rework isn't as good as original all matching but it's the next best
Thing. And some would argue more interesting to study and unravel .

Here is a few more pictures of the barrel, they are not great I don't have a macro lens. No code underneath at all just the waffen stamps. The only code is the one on top near the receiver. Thanks for taking the time to take a look and share your knowledge.

Ok, so with a little help from a friend, I was able to find out where it was reworked. The wrist stamping is most definitely a 69 and that would mean Kg69 or the Konigsberg depot.

Great legit rework.

Any idea of a what its worth? I'm changing my home insurance company and and am trying to figure out what my possessions are worth.

Thanks for the reply. It's a little disappointing and I was hoping for a higher number, but I understand that you are one of the more knowledgeable guys on k98s here.

A little tricky to put a value on it here given it’s rework history, but I’d pay closer to 2k. I do have a soft spot for early rifles though.

I think it looks as it should given its 75 plus years old and as been trough THE greatest conflict of 20th century.it as not been cleaned and polished and oozes history .IT SHOULD LOOK WORN IF IT WERE IN SERVICE FROM 1937 -45 DONT YOU THINK.
