Finally got my Big Dots for my G22 and, of course, headed to the range to see if i had them centered.

I was happily blasting away with CCI Blazer ammo and POW, noticed flame shoot through the top of my gun. I finished the mag and checked my gun, it looked fine. I started sifting through the brass and found a nicely blown casing. Not sure of it's poor quality control or the famous un-supported chamber of the G22.

That was with factory ammo? wow
That last pic shows where the trouble started, so it does look like the unsupported chamber had something to do with it.
If I were you I would go over the gun with a microscope before shooting it again.
I'm glad you didnt get hurt.

I like how the crack clearly started RIGHT where the chamber is unsupported. Post it over on glocktalk, even the most emotionally-invested of the glock faithful can do the math, with that pic...

I dunno... it looks to me like the hole started too far forward to be a unsupported chamber - Is it possible that this was an out of battery problem?

Also, that brass (aluminnum?) looks really old.

just finished a very detailed inspection of the gun and it's fine. placed the round in the chamber lined up with where the extractor grabbed it and it appears to have blown out at about 7 oclock in the chamber. and, yes, this is where the chamber is unsupported.

zero damage and i still have my eyes, my hands, and my gun.

i guess if anyone freaks and wants to sell their G22's at blowout prices let me know and i'll give you $100 for each one so i can continue to experiment at an affordable rate.

Not uncommon with aluminium cased Blazer ammo and an unsupported chamber.

Brass cased ammo is about the same price as Blazer and you get to reload.

I won't use aluninium cassed ammo in any of my guns.

havent seen any CCI aluminum for sale around here in ages..use to be popular back in the early 90s..no brass ammo locally is much cheaper in 9mm.

The original Glock frame was designed for the 9mm round.

The only way I would be shooting 40SW in a Glock is with a good after market barrel, with proper chamber support and on the larger Glock 20/21 frame.

manboy,
That's bites. I'd bet the case was faulty which is why it's been the only failure. We should keep an eye out when we're cleaning up to see if we can spot any other split cases.

Glad to hear you'll still be coming out on Wednesdays. People will pick on you more than me. :p

Want to put money on that, Max?;)

Get a call in to CCI detailing the failure. You may get a free case of "safe" ammo.:runaway:

I have nothing against Glocks, but this is just another reason you won't catch me using one - especially with punchy reloads.

Wow! Not to take anything away from story at all. But that brass looks wrong? Either really old or not right. I would be hesitent to shoot anymore of that stuff. Or take it back to who ever sold that to you.

You're rite FN, the original, first gen Glock was.
The 3rd gen (finger grooves & rail) has been
'beefed' up to accomidate the .40s&w pressures.
I read an article on this awhile back in whatever
that Glock magazine is called, the new frame
is designed for higher pressures: thicker where it
needs to be, has added support and and extra
locking block pin.
For ease of production, the 9mm is built on the
same frame.

For those of you who know better than I,
aren't the 9mm and .40s&w pressures the
same, or very close, the .40 just has
MORE of it ?

instead of doing all that to accommodate .40S&W why don't they just use metal instead of plastic

No sh*t.
OR..
why don't they just support their chambers like everyone else!
I was told it was a design to facilitate proper feeding. Ok, maybe so.
But I own two Sigs(aswell as two Glocks) which HAVE supported
chambers and boy, lemme tell ya, are they ever unreliable. . . . .yeah rite.
