Hello All,

I expect my PAL to be processed fairly soon so I have been shopping around a bit and stumbled upon 8 Kar98K at one of my local gun stores. I am a big WW2 history fan but don’t know much about the differences in Kar98K. They are 800$, which of any of these in the pictures would you go for.

A little more info, two of them are straight bolt handles while the remaining 6 have curved bolt handles.

ONe of them is quite light in colour, almost tan. Any chance it’s original German? The others are all dark reddish brown, might be RC
 
If you found 8 in one store, they are all more than likely Russian captures. Especially for that price.

Nothing wrong with RC 98s, especially if you're just planning on shooting them. I had a fantastic, absolutely beautiful non-RC Nazi-marked 98 that had a bent barrel and wouldn't shoot straight, so it's not a clear indication of quality for the Russians not to have messed with it.

If you're collecting, plan to spend at least double that. (Unless you get lucky...)

Check if the swastika has been peened off. The wings might still be there. If it's missing, it's probably a RC.
 
Will do, I’m sure they are Russian captures, I plan on shooting it so not too concerned just want a nice piece of history that shoots straight.
 
I really like one particular k98 they have in stock. My application just showed up online yesterday, from my quick math I am on average under a week away from being approved. Anyone know the legality of me paying for the gun, but not taking it home till my PAL shows up?
 
Nothing illegal about it, the store isn't handing over a firearm yntil you produce your PAL, your more or less just putting an item on hold with full payment. Varies from store to store, some will, some won't
 
Mauser 98's are good guns. Also if you are looking for a very accurate mauser that is very similar to a K98 some would argue better look at the Yugoslavian M48 they are beautiful guns. Corwin arms has some in cosmoline for under $500.

Otherwise a nice Russian capture can be a great gun. The parts don't match by number and they are sometimes a little rougher but a nice banger mauser is a super gun. Not many firearms of that quality made today for under $2k
 
I have a RC K98 from Lever Arms. Amazing shooter and still has the dirty birds, great choice for your first rifle. My first was an M44 - still have it!

Easiest way to tell if its Russian capture is to look for an X on the left side of the receiver - that is the refurb mark they put on everything they touched. They didn't always peen the birds, especially on friday afternoons.

You're not likely to find a K98 RC or not for under $800, buy it!
 
I am defintley looking to buy one of them most of them look to be in excellent shape! Never shot one but they have always been my favourite WW2 era rifle, just from the way they look, and the history behind their development.

Now just need the RCMP to hurry up.

Is it generally a good idea to have these checked by a gunsmith for safety’s after purchase?

I am also not quite sure the gun store employee knows what he has, said that they might not be around very long becuase no one is willing to spend 800$ on a clunker

You can if you to. They will most likely check the headspace and firing pin protrusion. If the gunsmith is feeling feisty they may check for cracks in the bolt jugs and receiver ring.

For the most part these surplus K98s are good to go. Off-the-shelf factory ammo is underloaded so the chances of bowing them up are slim to nil.

Personally, the only time I would send a K98 to a gunsmith is if it was sporterizsd and rebarreld to a different caliber. You don't know what the previous owner shot out of it.

If you want to be sure it's still there when you get your PAL, just put a deposit down on it. The store will be more than happy to hold it for you until you can take possession. Welcome to the addition.
 
Not sure they are all locked behind a case and I haven’t asked to look at them yet until I am a little closer to buying.
 
My 2 cents would be to buy an israeli Mauser chambered in .308/7.62 NATO they go from 650-850 on the equipment exchange and fire .308/7.62 NATO ammo, which is 50-100% cheaper than 8mm mauser. They are German mausers bought (or sent?) by Israel right after WW2.

As a new shooter you want to shoot a lot as shooting makes you improve.

About .63 cents/shot for surplus 7.62
about 1.50/shot for 8mm mauser
