Kel-tec SU16

sorry if this has been beaten to death already, but i've been sitting here for a week now staring at my new su16 and can't decide what i want to do with it

i've gotten as far as the stock as i'm thinking the ar stock adapter and a ctr or moe would be ideal.

what i'm stuck on is optics and front hand guard.

i've seen that sweet casv rail you guys have been modding and it looks great, but how sturdy is it and it looks like you have to remove the whole assembly everytime you want to disassemble the bolt for cleaning ?

i also realize any optic other than a red dot will need to be removed to clean as well :(

with that being said, i'm thinking quick detach rings would be a must, but i also wonder how well the polymer rail will withstand repeated torquing by the rings, so has anyone found a skinny picatinny rail that would clamp over the polymer rail, so the rings detach from the metal rail ?

or am i just being paranoid ?

I have a falcon 1.5-5x scope with lever-type warne rings.
Very nice scope. Really like the rings. Hasn't loosened up on the receiver, yet.
If I had the cash, I would of went with the ar style rings with the long picatinny base.

they are in the mail from questar as we speak
Good job!!

Hutchster the whole CASV does have to come off to clean but it's super easy to remove. 2 large screws for the main rail and 2 small screws for the 2 quad rails and it comes right off. Makes putting any optics you choose on it really easy.

It's also quite sturdy.

One of the main reasons why I had an "Ah Ha" moment. If you were thinking about just a scope and not doing this handguard I would recomend this qd mount for you.

Got it on my Redfield 2-7 accurange and weaver ultra low rings & I am loving it. Actually I am thinking this is a perfect coyote killer ;)

do you have a part number or a link to a dealer who sells them ?

i checked out the weaver site but can't seem to locate it, i did find the non-qd version of it.

How is the height of the scope for looking through? Does it need to be up on a riser or can it be down fairly low, and not have to compress your cheek, or hold your head sideways on the stock?

It can be mounted low. Mine sits barely off the rail so getting proper eye relief and use of the stock to rest cheek on is easy.

On my flat top AR, I found that with the straight stock, you have to elevate the optics fairly high to get a proper cheek weld. That goes part and parcel with straight stocks that are in line with the barrel, and have elevated iron sights.

The CASV takes care of some of the elevation you desire and the AR adapter for the SU comes with 2 sets of plates depending on where you want the stock to be. One puts it pretty much inline with the barrel and the other just slightly under it.

unfortunately with the CASV my Vortex Strikefire RDS rubs up against the rail in its low mount. I have to mount my RDS on high mounts. High mount + extra rail means no cheek weld for me. I am looking into stocks where you can mount a the um ..riser (?) on the stock.

My MagPul PRS has an adjustable cheek riser on it.

Anyone have an accuracy report from 100 yards?

2-3MOA with federal or remington factory ammo.
I believe it can do better. That ammo was crap.
Will be trying some 40rd Winchester white box JHP, when I can get out.
Maybe some handloads, if I get set up for reloading. 60gr Vmax, cci primers, once fired hornady brass, but I'm lost on what powder to use.

I'd like to see what it can do with quality ammo. I have an AR, 1:7.7 twist. If you feed it standard factory ammo, 40gr or 55 grain, you get much poorer results than either Federal Match grade 69gr or handloads with 69gr. Too many unaccounted for "fliers" with standard factory ammo. None with good ammo.
