kill a pig

Last year I shot a herford cow in the woods while deer hunting. First shot with the 243 hit a little low under the ear and really pissed it off. It needed a followup shot. So, unless you are absolutely sure of where to shoot it there is a chance of needing a second shot.

P.S. Yes I knew what I was shooting at, no I wasn't in trouble, it's a hell of a job gutting a cow in the woods.

:bump:

Please tell us more???

A friend bought a bunch of piglets, about 8 I think. He discussed dropping all 8 with his buddy, and sending them to the butcher. Before the fateful day, he decided to only kill 2 because the butcher didn't have room for all of them. I won't go into details, but it involved buddy standing in the middle of the pig pen, a marlin lever 22, and the owner of said pigs yelling "Wo, wo, wo, crazy man...only two". Not a shining example of firearm safety.:D
PS - The first one he shot went down like a sack...only to get back up.

pigs

My firearm options are 270 180 grain, 12 gauge 3 inch slug, 22 win mag 40 grain or a 7.62x39 (cz 858)...I sold all my pistols to go to school (plus it would be illegal..lol)

I remember when I was younger it was nearly time to slaughter the pigs and the barn caught on fire (arson). There was no need to round up the pigs and bring them back to the partially burned barn. Neighbors helped find the pigs and my uncle shot them in the head with a .22 LR.

Cleaned. Processed. Tasty.

Best of luck to you.

Draw an immaginary X between the eyes and ears. Aim for the center of the X and pull the trigger. A 22 is all that is needed. I used to work in an abatoir, many moons ago, and a 22 was used for both the cattle and the hogs, and it worked fine. The 22 magnum, with a solid, will work great. Happy porkchops.

A .22 to the centre of the 'x' formed by two imaginary lines from the ear on one to the eye of the other is pretty much SOP on most farms. It doesn't take much to kill a hog (or any other animal) if you shoot it in the brain. All you need is something that will penetrate the skull reliably. Cut the throat and bleed it out after you have shot it.

I saw a show (think they were in Italy) where they killed the pig, then covered it with dry straw and set it ablaze. A few minutes of burning and the pig was blistered and they scraped the skin.

I've never seen it doen that way before, it's a good idea if you have no torch.:)

The best way to kill a pig....

Front end loader tractor.

While the pig is eating slip a rope around one of legs and hog tie him...(excuse the pun).

Then pull tractor up to him and hook rope on front end loader.

Lift pig in air.

While suspended take a large sharp knife.(a 6" Buck knife works great)

Pierce pig in the heart.

He will slowly bleed completely out over next 1-2 minutes.

As an added bonus you can collect the blood and make some blood sausage.....

This one has killed one or two;) Fires a spike with the use of a blank.
I've done the straw thing once too. Works well and kills any bacteria on the skin.

A 22 will do fine, take your time and make your shot. Always try to be close to level with the pig. Aim between the eyes and up 1/2 inch make sure that your shooting back in to the pigs head.

Exactly the right place!! Draw an imaginary line between the pigs eyes, shoot ½ inch above the line dead center with that 22 Mag and that pig will die instantly. I have personally butchered about 100 pigs, and was given the instructions by a seasoned farmer who always butchered his own hogs. Never had a problem. Regards, Eagleye.
