Just got a Kimber 1911 ambi-safety, the one that utilizes a replacement hammer pin to hold it in place.

It's a MIM part, and for the price, I'm not impressed. Anyone got any comments or experience to pass on?

everyone has known for years that Kimber uses MIM. so does STI. and Ruger. why is it a problem NOW and wasn't it an issue before you paid for it?

Living up to your alias?

The fact that it's from the workshop of the Mad Madam MIM was not an issue before or after I bought it. Many 1911's utilize MIM parts as a cost saving measure. I guess I just expected more as so many worship at the feet of Kimber.

So, let me rephrase - does anyone have any comments or experience of the cross pin tin type of ambi compared to the more familiar 'wing' type (MIM or machined) held in place by the grip panel? Alles klar?

Ja, sehr klar.

I have one on my Kimber Rimfire and I have a Fusion wing type on a Colt and the Colt stock ambi safety on my Rail Gun (both held in place with the grip panel).

As far as issues regarding quality with the Kimber... I have none. I never was bothered by the quality or lack thereof. Sur, you can tell the workmanship isn't on par with the other parts manufactured from bar stock when you compare them. I have several other bar stock ambi safeties that I could mount onto the Kimber but I really don't see a need.

In terms of practical use, it does the same job as the others only in a different way. It's advantageous in regards to which grips you can use because you don't need the cut-out for it to work. I like the fact that when it is mounted there is no way for it to creep out of its place.

All in all, unless your part breaks or you just don't like the look of it, I really don't see the need to change it. I kept mine and I sleep well at night.

Thanks Johann!

I've also got an Ed Brown 'wing' type coming. My wife's new R1 will get one or the t'other. My Serie's 70 Gold Cup has a SS Swenson 'wing' type and it has never given the slightest problem, the grip panel preventing any lateral movement.

dude, you have an attitude. you wanted experience or opinions and bp7 gave one.
you didn't like the answer and you gave me attitude. i don't get it, man?

anyways; kimber is known for mim more widely than other companies even though kimber isn't the only ones who use mim parts nor a plastic mhs.
i mean they get crap for it, yet sti, colt, s&w do the same(i am assuming that a lot of the hate are from people who have not even tried a kimber
but are just jumping on a wagon. not directing this towards you, sharp). i feel the parts are fine. nothing went wrong with either of mine, and installing the ambi
safety on my kimber was quite a easy task. i am a bit more attracted to the ambi safety's with the tang... but thats more of an aesthetic thing.
the good thing about the kimber ambis is that you don't have to worry of making a notch for the tang. thats one thing i really liked.

So who's talking here - BP7 or masa? You got two aliases? My remark was addressed to the former who offered no valid information, just a snide remark about how "... everyone has known for years ..."; and you think I've got attitude .... ???

I think we're all resigned to the fact that MIM parts are here to stay in most guns. When it comes to the various options, you pays you money - you takes you choice.

well if you are aware of kimber parts being mim, why'd you buy it? in my opinion, i think it does the trick just fine. what bothers you about it? do
they actually feel cheap or too lose? what gun are you putting it in again? i know ambi safety is the same that comes stock on the gold match, raptor
etc... and they are, to me, pretty good for what they are.

haha, i am a duplicate account of bp7 because i thought it was condescending words towards him? come on, man. ask a mod to ip check me and bp7.
i would have been banned from the get go if that were true considering the strict rules that were instilled because of scammers on EE.

i have enough trouble keeping track of ONE personality, so having two IDs would be unbearable for me. really, i did try it once on another forum and MAN what a PITA that was...

anyhooo, sharpie, you did buy a kimber part and then said you were unimpressed with them using MIM processes for the price. and you asked for comments. are you a girl? really, only girls ask questions they can't handle the answers to. :p

ok, serious time - if you want non-MIM parts and are willing to pay the price, try that place called Fusion Firearms in the USA. i've not yet bought anything from Bob down there, but he's got enough machined 1911 parts to build a space shuttle. only reason i've not yet bought anything there is cuz i'm ok with MIM stuff. but if/when it breaks, i'll buy replacements from him. actually i might pick up a magwell from him one day - they look very nicely made!

You make a snide, condescending remark, without addressing the question, get annoyed when I respond in kind and then resort to personal remarks .... ??? Brilliant! Thanks for your contribution to the discussion. I'm sure we're all better informed for it.

I thought they were the same person too. haha.

But yeah, I have several Fusion parts on my 1911's. I am very impressed with their ambi safety; feels rugged and heavy and very ergonomic. I have a trigger and other parts from them. The only parts that disappointed me were their sights.

how was shipping from Fusion to you? was it fair priced, or kinda high / really cheap?
