I have one 1st generation SAA (a martial artillery I think) but I sure would like to know exactly what I have and I would like to send it to Kopec for an evaluation. I have read the Kopec book " A Study of the Colt SAA" but I still have some questions so can anyone out there provide me with some info on having a SAA sent to Kopec in the USA. Mine is a .45cal so it is restricted here in Canada.
1. what do you need to do to ship a restricted SAA from Canada to the US and how/what would he need to do to ship (an antique class in US) firearm back?
2. if you had a SAA evaluated by Kopec was it worth it?
3. Is there a Canadian expert equivalent to Kopec so I could have it done here?
thanks fitz

Shipping a restricted handgun to the USA is a bit of a pain. I have an original Colt SAA artillery also. You can get a very good evaluation if you are prepared to take some good photos and can provide a detailed description of markings and mechanical state. You might try posting the photos and description on the SAA forum ht*****tp://singleactions.proboards.com/index.cgi If you posted a few photos on this forum, there are some who could give you an approximate idea of its value. Here are some things to include:

1. all markings
2. serial numbers of the different parts (artilleries do not usually have matching serial numbers, at least the earlier ones do not)
3. has it been refinished in any way (wood or metal)
4. end play on the cylinder
5. bore condition
6. timing
7. detailed photos taken in indirect lighting, no flash, of each side, top, bottom, front, back of the gun.
