So I dug out a used lever gun i bought that the prior owner didn't clean before selling.
A peak in the bore showed a LOT of fouling. A few passes with a loaded up balistol soaked patch, a soak for an hour, followed by a bore brush got many of the big chunks out, but the patches started coming out clean, even though i could see dirt in there.
So i moved to solvents, mild at first, then to more aggressive stuff. Still not all out.

This week a package arrived from eBay with this Kroil stuff everyone is talking about. Wow-- 15 patch runs and they are coming out BLACK. Along with flakes of jacketing and lead. Finally, the rifling is brighter. After countless runs down the pipe, the patches started lightening up a touch. So i ran a soaked one down, and let the gun sit over night.
The next day, i started patching again. Black! After another round of gentle cleaning, the bore is finally sparkly clean.
So, kroil cleaned better than
1) Ballistol
2) Clenzoil
3) Hoppes #9
4) Birchwood Bore scrubber

I know a lot of folks use this stuff on their rimfires exclusively, but its a good gentle cleaner all around!

It's excellent stuff- even when just used for its original purpose as a penetrating oil to loosen rusted parts. You were lucky to get some as I don't think they have a Canadian distributor. I've seen references to it here on CGN but most people say they get it through where they work, and theie employer imports it themselves. For folks near the border in coastal BC, Hardware Sales in Bellingham stocks it. :)

I mix it 50/50 with Ballistol.

Ballistol has some properties that Kroil doesn't. Kroil is a penetrant not a lubricant as some people use it for. It is pure hell on carbon fouling and I use it to clean the piston on my SKS after flushing it with water. It will break up rust very quickly and when mixed with Ballistol seems to be an excellent preventative as well. I left a part soaking in a jar of my mix for a month and the rust on it just wiped off and when left on a covered but open shelf outside the rust didn't start to build up after another month of exposure.

Dewdney Mountain Products in Chilliwack carries it as well as does Del Selin's in Vernon

...Kroil is a penetrant not a lubricant as some people use it for. ..
The same mistake people make with WD-40, which is technically for water displacemet, as the initials indicate. Any lubricant properties are a minor byproduct.

Good to see that Kroil is available. It may be that some industrial supplier is bringing it in, or they are ordering it direct from Kano Labs. They also make versions with added silicone (Silikroil) and graphite (Penephite), as well as a number of other products.

12$ at CT...

And its good for guns ( image and says guns )

Absolutely! Guns typically need to be cleaned with a dry solvent before they are oiled. Deep Creep accomplishes both of these tasks simultaneously, and can be used for cleaning firearms, as well as lubricating and protecting them for long-term storage in one simple step.

Most people don't know that Deep Creep works great for cleaning and lubricating guns, as well as protecting them against the harmful effects of moisture and from freezing up when used in extreme cold conditions.

I have used Kroil, and although it works very well, I can't handle the smell of it in the house. Use it once and the odor lingers for a week.

Kroil will literally back out seized 6/48 scope base plug screws. I have used it and it is unbelievable. We all know a seized 6/48 will peel before it backs out most times. An old-timer told me if you spray some kroil in a shot glass it will climb right out of the glass. Not quite but it is GOOD stuff.

I couldn't find it anywhere in this end of Canada, and brownells wouldn't ship it so i bought it on eBay for 12 bucks. 2 cans.

That's a very good deal if it was the regular 8 oz. can, although the shipping might have been brutal. Kano's list is $9.50 direct from them, but shipping, even within the US, would add to that considerably. I was in Hardware Sales in Bellingham WA this afternoon and it was $13.99.

The smell, is a bit overpowering, as Ryan has noted!

I didn't know about Seafoam Deep Creep; sounds like a good product as well. I remember a few years ago people were recommending GM Top Engine Cleaner (?) which was supposed to be the same as one of the well-known gun cleaning products, but only a fraction of the price because it hadn't been repackaged as a specialty product..

If this stuff's so good, why doesn't CTC or Walmart sell it?

Just a guess but if Kano Labs doesn't have a Canadian distributor, it might be less convenient for them to stock it. And possibly they don't even know about it. There are lots of penetrating oils out there.

I have hunted in every store around here for Kroil and never have found it. Can maybe find Deep Creep I think I seen it someplace. If anybody has other solutions would like to know what products will work.
