One of the biggest questions I am asked about when I built my PCC for IPSC was what type of buffer system I went with. After spending countless hours researching buffer systems for 9mm blowback rifles in the last 2 years this is what I found. I hope my experience and research is able to help those that are lost on what buffer systems to use.

Here are the most common systems used from least to most expensive,
  • Using a heavier buffer with a flat buffer tube spring
  • Odin Works Adjustable Buffer
  • MBX Air Buffer Recoil Reduction System
  • KYNSHOT 9mm Recoil Buffer HD
  • JP 9mm Silent Captured Spring Gen 2 Short Stroke
  • Scheel MFG Roller-Delayed Buffer System- Complete System Gen 2
So, what to choose? Cheapest, Adjustable, Air, Hydraulic, Captured, or Roller?

They all work, but which one will work best for you?

All do basically the same thing, they all control the smoothness of the buffer movement and delay the action a slight bit for less recoil and better reliability while at the same time giving more stability and a faster follow up shot.

After hours of research, I decided on the Kynshot Hydraulic buffer, lots of good reviews, plus a 1 million round warranty on the buffer.

After some more research I found that I can enhance this buffer system more effectively by adding the following to the items,
  • A flat buffer spring (optional)
  • 2x, 2.5oz weighted spacers (.75” each) in front of the buffer for more weight and making it a shorter stroke
  • AR10 8.5” buffer tube to allow for the 2 weights that add 1.5” to the buffer
  • Overall BCG and Buffer weight 23.5oz
This is the overall result of the buffer upgrade; ammo definitely makes a difference also.

One warning, by using the 2 buffers spacers, you will NOT have last round lock back, nor will you be able to lock the bolt back. This is due to the short stoke of the BCG. I prefer no lock back for competition.

With the right combination of custom ammo, a compensator, and the upgraded buffer system, you find that there is minimal movement give great red dot tracking.

All this information and much more can be found in FB, Canadian PCC User group.

Kynshot Bltizkrieg HD buffer, AR10 rifle length spring and a 3 1/6-1/4" spacer in a carbine tube. You will need to remove the buffer retainer and spring . You will not get bolt lock back, but it isn't needed anyway if your shooting IPSC. We have done this on many a PCC and all have worked flawlessly so long as you have a tuned load for the rifle.

I run the same setup (Kynshot & buffer weights x 2 with flatware spring) in an FX9.

I fitted a JRC carbine buffer tube (1.5" longer than standard which is exactly what the 2 weights at 0.75" adds) and my bolt will lock back / LRBHO works.

The buffer tube was pretty cheap too from memory and they shipped direct to Canada.

Guess I could try fitting quarters until I short stroked it (might try that but doubt I would run it that way as I like the bolt locked back for option 3 starts - YMMV).

Yep, I have the same set up. JR Carbine buffer tube, AR10 Flatwire spring, Kynshot RB5015HD, a home made 5oz stainless steel spacer (1.5") and she has run flawlessly through 15 matches, at least a dozen training sessions, and a couple three gun matches. Shoots so buttery smooth its hard not to just be amazed every time you tap the trigger. Even got a couple Raven shooters hooked on the Kynshots.

I have a Raven with the kynshot hd and stock spring. I found these tungsten weights.

I am using 2 one ounce weights put together with the screw and high temp red loctite. I had to take just a hair off the outside to fit in the buffer tube and also ground three flats on the sides. I didn't go with the single 4oz weight because I wasn't sure if I would get reliable bolt hold open and this put me at just over 22oz total buffer bolt weight.
I only have 2 matches on this setup, so don't know yet how the tungsten is going to hold up. Will keep an eye on it through next season.

We have made custom weights .75” and 2.5 oz each

The biggest issue was found that we made channels on the sides for airflow, or the air movement impeded the buffer

Would this buffer work well with the Kodiak k9?

Curious due to its weird bolt system - even tho it is a blowback set up.

I ground three flats on the side for air flow. The thing with tungsten is a 2oz is just over a 1/4" thick and a 4oz is just over 1/2" thick

that is good if you want it to lock back on the last round.

the key is to have it short stroked for the action to be quicker in my book

The Maxim roller delayed buffer works pretty slick too. Definitely try one out if you get the chance.
For what platform? I was told by freedom ordnance that it wouldn’t work in the FX-9 unfortunately. I’d definitely try one out if I can build an AR-9 in the future should laws change.

Was also curious if anyone knows where I could get tubbs flatwire springs from?

I would contact Tubb direct. If that dont work you could import via A z t e c h or similar

Or you could just use a Strike Industries flatware, RDSC had stock last time I checked.

Yeah the maxim won't work on the FX9, but sure works good on the Raven. Just have to have the back of the bolt drilled out, and as a secondary effect it might help with the firing pin breakages some folks have experienced by balancing the pivot point in the bolt and taking the stress off the firing pin

It should work on the Kodiak, but you will have to take the buffer face off of the Kodiak buffer, It's a weird design... There is a guy on the Kodiak K9 Facebook group that has done it and added a heavier buffer. Sure would be a bonus if you could get it to work.
Before and after from that group. Maybe hit the guy up and see how he did it

Appreciate the response!

Yeah I was curious as the k9 is a weird blowback impingement design amalgamation
