Thought some might like to see this.

The case is a Harbor Freight Apache 4800. Obviously you can use whatever princess auto, canadian tire, pelican, nanuk case you can get a good deal on. I drove the pins for the side clasps out as I just find them irritating and my concern is impact/portability vs actually submerging the case in water.

The base is a Arkco Machine Quad Base XL, he also makes a slightly smaller quad base and spike feet if you plant to use it on the bare ground. He does ship to Canada.

The recoil trigger is a JKL Precision along with their along with a picatinny mount and a magnetic mount. These guys unfortunately don't ship here, but if you look into it you can make a recoil trigger for a few bucks. There are also some other options out there that may ship here. I just found it more convenient to buy it ready to go, especially with the mounts.

The tripod is an Outdoorsman that I certainly wouldn't buy for this purpose, but I have it for other things and I also had a spare plate for the quick detach head. It interferes with the legs of the stand a little, but not much. It is stable, and any full size tripod with a similar QD plate could work, or you could just keep an allen key in the case and swap the stand and plate quickly.

The stand I really like over some of the mini tripods I've seen, they put the unit up kind of like a sail and it weighs very little so is prone to falling over in the wind. It has enough weight and is low profile enough that I can't see it tipping short of a gale.

Extra stuff, I have a cheap USB power pack, a USB cable and power block, and batteries as a last resort.

Also, thanks to LabRadar for sending me a few stickers free of charge to mark the case!

I’ll revive this thread instead of starting a new one.

I just received a great condition Labradar that came with battery pack and a RAT trigger.

I plan on testing out some loads for some lever actions (45/70, 30-30, .357 mag). There are no instructions for the RAT, which seems to attach to the firearm via Velcro strap. I planned on strapping in around the barrel closer to the chamber.

I take it the muzzle is supposed to be 6” or so forward of the unit to protect it from muzzle blast?

Any other tips?

Cheers.

Yeah, it’s not super sensitive to where the placement is with the recoil trigger. Keeping it back a bit makes sense. I think you can attach a recoil trigger anywhere, but running a bolt with vigour can set it off.

Looking forward to taking it out. I hated setting up my Caldwell chrono.

The RAT needs to be attached somewhere solid so that it reliably feels the recoil. I tend to attach it right behind the objective scope cap hinge or behind the forward scope ring. If the RAT is just floating it won't register reliably.
I used to have the muzzle even with the Labradar, but now run a quad pod. That puts the LR above the barrel, away from muzzle brake ports. On the bench that puts my LR about 8" behind the muzzle, but with side-ported brakes it doesn't see any blast.

On bolt guns, I put the RAT against the barrel, right where the chamber is. Wrap electrical tape to hold it firm. Never have a problem.
And with the RAT, you can position the unit anywhere you want it.....even beside or over the bench. As long as you still aim it properly at the target.
