Large Game Pics - Deer, Moose, Bear...

holy cow, or i mean bull... wow did it take long to get him out of the bush??

Here's more of the story:

After putting up with pouring rain, mud, 15" of wet snow that flattened our tent(with me in and unable to move because I was pinned like a bug to my cot), 90 kph wind that flattened huge areas of poplar, hours of opening up roads and seismic lines and other miscellaneous crap, this was the result

He stepped out on a line just as I came out of the bush. Broadside looking at me. Rifle up, count points(4 big ones on each brow palm), shift point of aim. Boom.

The range was about 35 yds. The bullet clipped the point of his elbow, took out part of the heart, liquified the bottom of both lungs and carried on. He tipped over after about 30 more yds . There was a second shot that hit him but we won't go into that. A third killing shot(not required but.....) at very close range finished him.

We(4 of us) had spent about 6 hours opening up an old road behind our camp so that we could get to a couple of seismic lines. It took another hour of cutting out the seismic line by 7 of us to get our ATVs to him. We have an aluminum trailer that will hold a whole moose. We were in and out in about 3 hours.

He dressed out at 640 lbs at the butchers. He had a 43" spread with 8 points on each side. It was sure nice not to agonize over the number of brow points.

(For non-BCer's information, in the area where we hunted, mature moose must have 3 or more points on one of their brow palms)

4 Brow tines?

I only see three

There's actually 4 on both brow palms. In the picture you can't see all the points on the side furthest from the camera, but on the near side there are also 4. The 4th is the one by the recoil pad. it is to the left of the narrowest part of the rack.

I find this to be one of the more stupid hunting rules out there. How many dead moose do you think get left in the bush becaus ethey are missing a point?

quite a few...its either a tri palm or 10 points on one side...and i have heard of alot being left..here where i hunt we can only shooot the lil guys...

I suspect a few are left. But maybe the question should be how many are left because of stupid/blind/don't-give-a-####/trigger-happy hunters.

The alternative to the point restrictions may have been going to an LEH system.

Just as a matter of interest, Alaska requires 4 points on the brow palm or a spread of 50" plus.

not to offend anyone but I don't believe you can count that as a brow point...........

No offense. My skins pretty thick.

From the Regs
Moose - Tripalm Bull - means a bull moose having at least one antler with a brow palm bearing three or more points (tines). The brow palm is separated from the main palm by the deepest antler bay.The deepest bay is the bay whose vertex (deepest location) is the shortest distance from the antler base, when measured along the surface of the antler.

Here's a close-up of the antler in question.

The deepest bay is the one to the right of the curved tine(second tine from right.) It may not look that way but trust me. Still in doubt??? Come over for a beer and take a look. :D

Is that from the widest distance across the rack? I though he looked bigger than that. The moose with me on page one of this tread is 54" across the widest point but yours looks bigger to me.

Nope, 43"(plus or minus) at the widest point. I thought yours looked bigger. By the time we got back to him and got some pictures, he was all rigored up or else we would have turned him over for some better shots.

My big one (in the photo) was the last big one that I shot... I had one friend helping me and he is allergic to deer/moose so I had to skin and bone him on the spot and pack him out. Dead at about sunset... finished loading him into the truck about 24hrs later. I could hardly turn the ingition key I was so beat  Since then we have become paddle horn hunters, better eating and less work :D

This is my biggest mulie...I shot him with a bow last week at 40 yrds. Grossed 185.
