LaRue, PWS, KAC etc, What Are We Really Paying For?

People need to keep in mind that nothing is more disappointing than getting your posterior handed to you by the guy with a rife costing 25% of what you paid.

Hasn't happened yet. Usually I have to give those guys a mulligan because something on their gun failed and they couldn't complete the course of fire or the drill.

Never happened to me, but I HAVE had my butt handed to me by guys using similar type and configuration of service weapon on more than one go! Again, I'd invest in the Operator, that's what really counts.

It does. Often. I watched one of the guys who authored the Canadian "Gunfighter" program use a Norinco 14.5"bbl rifle to school a guy running a LWRCi. There's a few more, but it's not my place to say.

I believe you but this Norinco shooter wouid need to equal this at least to whip my KAC SR15 Mod 2 in a fair shootout... JP.

I haven't seen mentioned the fact that some of those top tier rifles come with ACCESSORIES. The KACs come with BUIS worth like 400$, the stock is worth like 280 dollars, the KAC rails are probably a couple hundred more than your average rail, and then there's the fact that the bolts are rated for 25000 rounds I believe it was? What about the ambi lower? All those little things add to cost. You take the additional cost of those extras away, you're left with the price of a used Daniel Defense rifle.

funny you mention what KAC bolts are rated for. Just cracked my Armalite NiB bolt a half hour ago :/. That saw about 30k rounds though I've never sen a bolt crack before.

We were running dynamic and IA drills ala a carbine course he authored for a site sponsor. I was one of the auditors prior to the course being offered.

Just out of curiosity have you ever handled, fired or owned a H&K AR and if so any thoughts on how they compare to any/all the AR's you've handled/shot?

Cheers D

No, never had the chance to shoot an HK AR. I have owned 2 SL8-4's a USC, and a USP Tactical though so I've seen what HK is capable of and they do make great firearms. Unfortunately they seem to cost about double the nearest competitor and they have pretty much the worst customer service for civilian rifles and pistols. I will also do my best to never deal with their Canadian importer again, they were absolutely no help at all when I blew up my USP, total a-holes.
I'm sure they have one of the best rifles on the market but for a civilian shooting on a one way range I could never justify the price.
Right now my PWS 12 inch is at around 5000 rounds and has yet to have a failure that wasn't operator error and when you open it up there is pretty much no visible wear. It is more than I need and shoots better than I can. I've shot sub moa groups with match ammo which is pretty good for a non free floated piston operated rifle.

Most Ferrari owners don't know how to drive.

So true, most guys have more money than brains these days, watch most guys drive their corvette and it's immediately obvious that without the electronic aids they would be wrapped around a power pole in 3 blocks or less.

I'm no operator and I don't compete, I just like nice things so my middle to upper end PWS and my other black rifles serve me just fine.

Spend as much as you can comfortably afford but don't be a fool thinking that just because your rifle cost over $2000 you're going to out shoot a guy with a $1000 rifle. We used to have a saying in motocross, "it's 95% rider and 5% bike". Same holds true for most things where there is a human/machine interface. Training is always more important than equipment (within reason).

As long as it's mil spec, I don't care. If you want to compete, barrel and trigger are everything. Upper and lower just hold everything together

I have noticed a few people keep mentioning LaRue, but it was my understanding they can't be bought in Canada by civilians. Has something changed?

Why does an aero lower cost much less than a colt or colt Canada or other cerro forged lower?

Stripped they are the same thing. Aero supplies many of the tier one builders. Just different roll marks. Yet way different pricing.

Once you answer that, the AR world will become much clearer to you.

at the end of the day a business who puts out hundreds of rifles has the buying power to put together a nice rig at a much MUCH better price than an individual can..

case in point, I just bought a Stag M6 after realizing (after the fourth build :)) that I could not even get the upper here for the price of the complete rifle on IRUNGUNS.. I got it on sale for $856 USD (around $1KCAN)

Another sponsor has the UPPER alone for over $1200 CAN, and to get the barrel only is at least $600 by the time its delivered...

building is really really fun, but NOT cost effective and thus you will not get as nice a product for the same money... That being said, one can put together a very functional rifle that shoots well and looks great..

barrels, triggers, and bolt carrier groups seem to be over-priced to me - in general. Then the whole brand name game takes it to crazy town with the lower/upper sets and charging handles, and gas blocks, and especially the furniture.

I jump on a deal when I see one... Like this lovely item: irunguns.us/product.php?p=new-colt-le6920-16-complete-barrel-assembly
It would cost me over a hundred bucks just for the gas block, flash hider, and barrel nut.. so $180CAN is phenomenal for a Colt barrel!!!

IMO Colt,KAC, and HK earned the position they hold, not to say that Wilson Combat or Seekins don't make as good of a rifle, but Colt, HK, KAC "cut there teeth" in the war zone, that resonates with me.
Colt lost their contract to FN and had to go into bankruptcy protection as a result. That resonates with me.
