I know I am a bit late in responding to this thread. My apologies. The CSSA began working on a certification or safety course for IDPA a couple of years ago when it became obvious that the many clubs and individuals were shooting the match with no prior holster training. It is not madatory to take any kind of training for IDPA as it is with IPSC and CSSA PPC. Since many of these shooters are CSSA members and covered by our insurance, we thought it prudent to at least offer a training course for the clubs. One of our Regional Directors, David Burke, offered to set up a course and it is now being implemented.

The sole purpose of the course is to ensure those shooting an IDPA type match are safe. No conspiracy, no money grab. The course fee covers travel, meals, hotel, printing, etc for the course. The instructors are volunteers, as they are for all of our courses.

There are many clubs who are shooting IDPA matches without the course and that is their choice. Our course is available for those clubs who want to ensure a hightened level of safety at their range and to protect our insurance record. Any accidents affects all of us and could jeopardize our insurance status.

I hope this answers any of your questions. If not, please let me know.

I have heard concerns regarding this course, IE. the instructor with his finger in the trigger guard when not on target, sweeping, and breaking safe directions of angle to target/range. What does the CSSA course cover? Is it just safe holster handling or is it handling that will be safe under the stress of match conditions?

I think , Larry the thing was that CSSA really didnt bother with things in IDPA style shoting until it became very popular in the area, then all a sudden, the CDPA course was there, for 50 bucks
We as others here have noted, the new shooters are closely monitored during the match, and have practice matches for them as well. The regular shooters help out ALOT
Mind you, we have not had the CSSA IDPA class here, so I cant comment on safety, etc of the instructors, BUT i have taken the club level safety instructors class here.

I am the CDP league manager and instructor at our club, and I can assure anyone who is interested or who is questioning the safety aspect of CDP, that safety is our first and foremost proirity when teaching this course and any of the CDP instructors will agree with me. I am not really sure what the point of this thread is anymore, we went from an invitation to a course, to affiliation concerns, to complaints about the cost to safety issues. Did I miss something along the way?

I'm just the guy to tell you what you don't want to hear. I tried to keep everything politically correct but screw it. I like to shoot, I take all the crazy courses offered by all the crazy people and pay out a lot of money. I have been employed for the past 27 years in one job or another where my employment required me to carry a gun. Yet I still like to shoot for sport on the weekends. That is where every thing is going off the rails. A lot of people are making a lot of money off of new or lesser shooters under the name of firearms training. I have seen instructors from all organizations teaching and running courses just this year, that were not safe and in some cases dangerous. We have people out there instructing that should not even have a PAL. So there it is. If you want to shoot for fun, find someone who knows something about guns and safety and get trained. And for the rest of you stop trying to make money from your hobby at the expense of new shooters.

What is the failure rate for candidates on CSSA firearms instructor's courses?
Does anyone know?

Last quote I had up here for IPSC Black Badge Course was $250. CDP is $50. as we speak. Not sure what $250 gets me but if I want a Black Badge then it either is worth $250. or it isn't. what I do know is $250 is going to keep a lot of shoters out of IPSC, hopefully CDP will capture those shooters with the more modest fee. Anything to expand our sport and handgun ownership in Canada has to be a plus.

My BB course was like $150. It was 2 days and one evening. Had a small practice match afterwards. Got a free lunch. I thought it was money well spent.

$150 is a good deal. I think I paid $120 including the match fee. $250 seems a tad high.

yeah got KFC for lunch..only got 3 pieces though...so I had to supplement..lol

My $120 included the first year membership as well, so the course was $50, the match was $20, and the membership was $50.

yeah it was money well spent. Anybody who is sitting on the fence about joining should just go ahead and do it. Dont be put off by some people, the vast majority ive met are like me and are there just to have fun.

Even if you only shoot once in awhile it still worth trying it.:D

It may be appropriate for CSSA (or IPDA) to design an afternoon basic skills/safety course for CDPA so beginners could get the ground work done, and go on to shoot some club level "fun" (x)DPA courses to get their feet wet. Still maintain the 2 day course for people with a more advanced interest.

Amen! The voice of reason.
We need people on the range shooting. DONT OVER COMPLICATE IT !

I just took a retirement course which you tazpayers paid for! :D

The course was 3 days long, cost was $750 each!!!!

My wife wanted to take a pole dancing course for $169 for 6 hours worth of lessons.

Dance lessons at Arthur Murray's $45/- per hour.

Front sight training in the US - $2900 soon to be $4900 for one week.

The black badge course is worth every penny. It's a lot of fun and you do learn. Anyone whinning should go and take a look at course costs in other areas. Shooting sports is the cheapest sport for instruction I have found.

Great to hear if I needed it but I don't. Don't want to spend that kind of money to learn how to dance either...of course I don't dance so there you are.

Thats not the point. There is already enought obstacls/time/$$ facing a new shooter. What about the people that just want or would shoot the odd club match? We cant afford to turn them away
Finger off the trigger, muzzle down range. Its not that hard!
